The Renaissance of Craftsmanship
Robert C. Martin, Object Mentor, USA

What does it mean to be a professional software developer? What rules do we follow? What attitudes do we hold? And how can we maintain our professionalism in the face of schedule pressure? In this talk Robert C. Martin outlines the practices used by software craftsmen to maintain their professional ethics. He resolves the dilemma of speed vs. quality, and mess vs schedule. He provides a set of principles and simple Dos and Don’ts for teams who want to be counted as professional craftsmen.
By oredev

The Renaissance in Development (without intro)
Ted Neward, ThoughtWorks, USA

Thanks to the plateau of per-chip performance increases and the resulting need to work better with multi-core CPUs, the relative difficulty of mapping user requirements to general-purpose programming languages, the emergence of language-agnostic "virtual machines" that abstract away the machine, the relative ceiling of functionality we're finding on the current crop of object-oriented languages, and the promise and power of productivity of dynamically-typed or more loosely-typed languages, we're about to experience a renaissance of innovation in programming languages. Come hear why this is, and what practicing programmers need to do in order to ride the forefront - instead of the trailing edge - of this new wave in computer science.
By oredev

The Renaissance Thinker (without intro)
James Bach, Satisfice ,USA

In 1961, Jerry Weinberg wrote of testing as a challenging cognitive activity worthy the most ardent puzzle-solver. But by 1972, the Chapel Hill Symposium on software testing confirmed that the field was going a different direction: tools, test cases, scripting, and away from the development of thinking skills. The problem with all that? It doesn't scale. The mechanistic and technocratic approach to testing falls apart as complexity skyrockets. We need thinkers. We need professional rapid learners. In this talk I will share my vision for the renaissance thinker.
By oredev

Business Model Impact on Software Architectures
Luke Hohmann, Enthiosys, USA

This is a double session interactive lecture based on the material found in Beyond Software Architecture: Creating and Sustaining Winning Solutions (Addison-Wesley), a 2004 JOLT Productivity Award Finalist.DescriptionIn this session, internationally recognized agile product management expert Luke Hohmann will review the seven most common ways that software related product and service offerings make money and how each of these affect your software architectures. We'll explore such things as the functional and non-functional requirements that a business creates on your architecture and how to structure your solution for maximum value. We'll also review the role of Digital Rights Management solutions and how they can be integrated into your architecture so that you're lowering overall development costs while increasing your revenues by protecting and managing your rights. During the lecture a series of interactive worksheets will help you tailor these approaches to meet your specific needs.Target AudienceSoftware architects who work for companies whose products are, or soon will be, based on software (e.g., SaaS software, traditionally deployed software, embedded software, software that creates unique data, and so forth)Product / program managers at all levels of the organizationSenior technical leaders whose choices may constrain, or be constrained by, business decisionsBenefitsAt the end of the lecture participants will be able to:Distinguish between business, pricing , licensing, and licensing enforcement modelsReview the seven ways in which software can make money and compare these with current practicesExplore strategic implications of a given business model on software architecture to better understand the ramifications of choosing a given model
By oredev

Beneath the Surface: The Natural Experience Vision
Daniel Makoski, Microsoft. USA

For more than thirty years, people have been learning the language of computers. It's now time for technology to learn the language of people: touch, voice and gesture. This session will outline the design philosophy behind Microsoft's efforts to create natural, intuitive and emotional products, and provide a glimpse into how the Surface User Experience team is working to make this vision a reality.
By oredev

Increase the productivity and quality of your architecture through modeling and metadata management
Michaela Cato, Sybase, Sweden

This session will provide you with insights into the complete life cycle of a modeling tool implementation project, from the business case to the global roll-out. The goal of this project was enabling this company to evolve from document-driven to information-driven. Some of the key issues addressed include:What management decisions are needed? (Who needs to make them? When are they needed in the project life cycle?)Which roles exist in a modeling project? (What skill sets are needed for these roles?)How do you marry the capabilities of the tool with the way your company works, and the methodology you have chosen? To what extent should any mismatches be address in the tool? What are some of the key criteria of a successful roll-out plan?
By oredev

Agile Architecture, with an Update
James Coplien, Gertrud & Cope, Denmark

James "Cope" Coplien has long been speaking about the need to maintain good but lightweight architectural practices in an Agile setting, and points to both industry experience and formal studies that support this position. Cope will talk in general about winning strategies that amplify the Agile values through good architectural practice. In the in-depth seminar that follows, Cope will cover these techniques in a bit more depth. He will also describe recent work with Trygve Reenskaug that looks closely about how to capture the structure of Use Cases directly in an OO architecture, and about when and how to do that.
By oredev

BJ Hargrave, IBM, USA

Suddenly everyone is talking about OSGi. It is the overnight sensation 10 years in the making. This session will examine why the OSGi technology is important now and why it will continue to be important tomorrow. We will take a look at how the technology arrived at it current position and what is in the pipeline for the next release. We will also talk about the stewards of the technology, the OSGi Alliance, and how the alliance will be evolving to encourage broader participation in developing the technology.
By oredev

Getting Started with Cloud Computing
Adam Skogman, Jayway, Sweden

Cloud Computing sounds fluffy, so what are the real-life benefits? And how can I start using the Cloud today, in my own projects? The first step: Getting more power at a low low costHow can we use the cloud today, by moving parts of our application or environment to the cloud? We'll share our hand-on experiences with developing using the cloud for everything from testing to deployment. The next step: Scaling out in the cloudThe cloud brings new issues and concerns. How do you best store data if it's stored in distributed data centers? How can you ensure data consistency when ACID-style transactions are your biggest bottleneck? How will it affect your architecture that servers are added at any time?
By oredev

Know Your Units
Kevlin Henney, Curbralan, UK

These days testing is considered sexy for programmers. Who'd have thought it? But there is a lot more to effective programmer testing than the fashionable adoption of a unit-testing framework: effective unit testing involves (a lot) more than knowledge of assertion syntax.Testing represents a form of communication and, as such, it offers multiple levels and forms of feedback, not just basic defect detection. Effective unit testing requires an understanding of what forms of feedback and communication are offered by tests, and what styles encourage or discourage such qualities. Unit testing can highlight coupling problems, functional defects, problematic programming practices, awkward programmatic interfaces, overly procedural objects, overly object-like procedures, unclear requirements, poor integration culture, development process problems and so on. However, not everyone appreciates that problems with unit testing tend to be a consequence of these deeper problems, and so they aim to fix or criticise symptoms rather than root causes, thereby missing a valuable opportunity for improvement and learning. While there is certainly more to testing than unit testing, and more to a well-rounded approach to development than just testing, a failure to appreciate the role and practice of unit testing can lead to disappointment or a skewed notion of testing as a programmer's responsibility. This session aims to look at some issues, examples and counterexamples that help to highlight some of the problems and offer some solutions.
By oredev

Efficient ways to work with requirements
Fredrik Scheja, Sogeti, Sweden

This talk is about the cooperation between test organisations and the people working with requirements. How do we work as efficiently as possible? When during the project lifecycle can we gain from each other? How do we best gain from each other? When do we think alike and what are the crucial differencies in the way we work and think? What is a testable requirement? How to work during changes in the requirements? How to inprove our relationship in order to create the best product ever?
By oredev

Heuristic Based Testing
Mattias Göransson, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, Sweden

A heuristic is a method to help solve a problem. It is particularly used as a method that often rapidly leads to a solution that is usually reasonably close to the best possible answer. Heuristics are "rules of thumb", educated guesses, intuitive judgments or simply common sense. The talk will focus on:What is Heuristic Based Testing? Why do we do it at Sony Ericsson? Why have we chosen to combine two test approaches “Heuristic Based Testing” and “Test Case Based Testing”?How do we do it at Sony Ericsson?Heuristic Session-Based Test Managementat Sony Ericsson.Heuristics in out Test Management SystemLessons Learned from implementing Heuristic Based Testing.
By oredev

Wanted: Context-driven test designer
Torbjörn Ryber, Fearless Consulting, Sweden

In order to succeed with your assignment as tester you need to adapt to every project’s specific needs. There is no universal solution regardless of what self-appointed test specialists or so called universal standards may tell you.I will give you examples of two projects I have worked in with very different preconditions. The first project involved testing a very complicated set of rules for credit rating, the second a system for handling customers who did not pay their mortgages on time. The techniques I used to design test cases vary from mathematical-logical decision tables and decision trees to test the set of rules to interviews with the users in order to test the process of handling customer issues. The execution method varied from a scripted approach when testing the set of rules to a more exploratory approach when.I will talk about how a tool box of different techniques can help you with your own testing challenges and give you some helpful tips to aid you on your quest on becoming an excellent test designer.
By oredev

Storytelling Techniques
Karen N. Johnson, Independent, USA

In a fast-paced world with volumes of data thrown at us each day, it’s hard to find meaning and relevancy in what is tossed in front of us. Our project stakeholders face the same challenge of trying to sift through information in order to find meaning. Storytelling techniques can help us to take facts important and small from our testing experiences and weave together information in one format that brings data to life: the story.Students will learn how to use compare and contrast techniques to offset information so that data points stand out and yet we don’t lose the context. Students will learn how to take one element of test information to represent a broader picture. A technique of twining facts both small and large to keep information together and coherent will be explained. In all cases, thorough examples of presenting test information will be used. Specifically, the stories and techniques will be centered on reporting performance test results.Storytelling done well pauses the speed button, restoring our mental peace well enough to not just listen but digest, to resonate with the information we have at hand. We might think of storytelling from our childhood days and envision our time-starved, impatient stakeholders as being unreceptive to a story when what they demand is hard, cold facts. But there are techniques of building information in such a way that we can resolve questions and illuminate meaning without building long-winded tales. This unique class is designed for testers and test managers who frequently need to communicate information up, up to their bosses, executives, project managers and other stakeholders. Students will learn how to communicate performance test results in an effective style.
By oredev

Pex - Automated Exploratory Testing for .NET
Nikolai Tillmann, Microsoft Research, USA

Pex (http://research.microsoft.com/Pex) is a white-box test generation tool for .NET. Starting from a hand-written parameterized unit test, Pex analyzes the program-under-test to determine relevant test inputs fully automatically. To this end, Pex executes the program multiple times with different inputs while monitoring the taken execution paths. Pex uses a constraint solver to determine new test inputs that will exercise different execution paths. As a side effect, Pex may find errors in the program. The result is a traditional unit test suite with high code coverage. In addition, Pex suggests to the programmer how to fix certain errors. Pex is integrated into Microsoft Visual Studio.
By oredev
