Answering Ashley's question which was:
Dearest Ohdoctah,
This situation is confusing to me, but I hope it will make more sense to you. I care about my boyfriend a lot. I want things to last between us. I don't know if we have different perspectives of what a relationship is or what.... I'll try not to make this too long, but it's a little hard to explain and has a few components to it....
I like being with him and talking to him, and I don't think of myself as a clingy girlfriend, but the way he responds to me sometimes makes me feel like a pest. He never says anything to that effect, I guess, just the way he acts towards me sometimes. I would chalk it up to him being an independent guy, but I'm pretty independent, too, so that explanation doesn't work for me. Just an example, the other day I got a little upset about something; then I asked him if I was more difficult than his ex-girlfriends. He hesitated and said no, just that I required more attention, but that I had other (good) qualities.
Another thing is, when you care about someone, you usually do things to make them happy, right? I know I do. I don't feel like he ever tries to do anything special to make me happy, though. I don't mean he should go out and buy me an expensive present or anything, just anything to show me he cares.
I know he likes me. He's told me before that he does. Plus, I sincerely doubt he'd be with me at all if he didn't. He hadn't had a girlfriend for two years before we started going out. So he doesn't settle. And I usually want sex more than he does, so I know he's not with me for sex. I'm not rich or anything, so he's not mooching on me. In August he's graduating and moving 2 hours away from where we are now, and he's told me that it's no big deal and we will be able to stay together. So I guess all in all it's safe to assume he cares about me. But it's kind of killing me that I never have anything tangible of it. Maybe it's just things I'm not noticing. I never feel like he likes me as much as I li
