America's Cultural Heritage Underwater: USS Arizona: Preserving a War Memorial

Funded by NCPTT, Montana Public Television has produced a series of videos that highlights the nation’s underwater archeological treasures and features the preservation work of the National Park Service’s Submerged Cultural Resources Group (SCRG).

According to Ronald Tobias of Montana Public Television, “The project came as a result of the realization that the Submerged Cultural Resources Unit had been archiving images of the America’s underwater parks for many years and that it was being under-utilized as a valuable internal resource. Since outreach is such an important part of our federal research mandate, Larry Murphy of SCRG agreed to allow Montana Public Television access to the archives, and with the grant money awarded to us from NCPTT we were able to create a series of programs for public television about the work being done to preserve many of our country’s treasures underwater.”

As a result of NCPTT funding, six half-hour programs have been created that chronicle the work of the Submerged Resources Unit’s effort to save and preserve several important sites, including the USS Arizona in Hawaii, the B-29 Bomber at the bottom of Lake Mead, the Ellis Island ferry in New York harbor, and shipwrecks at Fort Jefferson and Biscayne National Park and at Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. Public awareness of the Park Service’s work to preserve our national heritage is an important part of the mission of the Park Service, and NCPTT’s funding made these presentations possible. Without the support, the archive material would have slowly slumped its way toward oblivion.
By ncpttmedia

Building Dry Stone Retaining Walls

This video shows how to build small drystone retaining walls from beginning to end; laying out the shape, digging the foundation, determining the wall angle, building the face, packing the back, and leveling the top. The techniques are suitable for all rock types, whether glacially rounded, angular, or flat-bedded.

A series of graphic drawing illustrates the principles of retaining wall construction, followed by two case studies showing on-site training classes. The first project is a low, two-foot wall suitable for a garden, with a Master Craftsman instructor who discusses the plans as well as the problems the class members encounter and solve. The second project is a four-foot wall that supports and equestrian trail and traverses a wet-weather water course in a Louisville park.

From small retaining walls in home gardens to road and trail walls in state and national parks, drystone is increasingly the material of choice. The flexibility of mortarless masonry is ideal for terraces and stream banks; it is functional, beautiful, and natural. Most projects do not require poer tools or machinery, and there is no need for harsh chemicals common in most construction.

The projects in the video were organized and managed by the Dry-Stone Conservancy. For instructions in print, you may want to consult the section on retaining walls in the DSC handbook, "Building and Repairing Drystone Fences and Retaining Walls."
By ncpttmedia

Retaining America's Dry Stone Heritage

This video documents the repair of damaged drystone walls in the popular Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park. It shows the use of modern equipment - replacing donkey power, pulleys, and wenches - lifting the irregular, awkward, and extremely heavy schist and gneiss boulders back into place. There is no mortar or concrete. The footage depicts the planning and organization essential for a large-scale restoration project, a project that serves as a prototype for future genuine repairs.

The C&O Canal was one of the nation's most abitious industrial engineering experiments of the mid-1800's, overcoming a 605-foot elevation change to provide a flatwater route 185 miles inland to the coalfields of the Allegheny Mountains. Masons built stone dams, culverts, embarkments, abutments, spillways, tunnels, acqueducts, a series of locks, and lined the canal prism with dry stone retaining walls.

At Harpers Ferry, the canal, roadway, and newly built railroad, all shared the same narrow space where the Potoma and Shenandoah Rivers cut through the Blue Ridge. After 150 years, the 1996 floodwaters, channeled forcefully through this passage, damaged the old canal walls. Downstream, at Washington, large tree roots had grown through the drystone masonry, and heavily industrial warehouses, built too close to the canal, damaged the canal walls there. Park officials, emphasizing the Park Service's philosophy of authentic preservation, partnered with the Dry Stone Conservancy to repair two damaged canal sections. This video is the story of that procedure.
By ncpttmedia

This project produced a video for training technicians in correct methods for preserving stone walls and rock fences. The video is a primary training resource, providing graphic instruction on how to repair, rebuild and relocate stone walls and rock fences. In addition to providing training to practitioners, the video explains fence and wall construction to archeologists, engineers, preservationists and conservators.
By ncpttmedia
