flipping the switch causes current to flow in the "bobbin". This movement of charge generates a magnetic field.

The iron "core" reinforces the magnetic field of the bobbin.

The changing magnetic field induces a current in the aluminium ring

It's an alternating current so the magnetic field is constantly changing

The induced current in the aluminium ring generates a magnetic field that opposes the field from the bobbin/iron core. So it repels off the top!
