i think the "senseless" plurks also happen at twitter alot ("just took another sip")
some people do this and i personally think it's fun - sometimes, not always. i do this as well to put a little fun in my everyday work life (with twitter) and my network does too. 
i like the mix of news, support, first mover infos and fun you get at twitter, when you follow the right people :)
plurk - in my eyes - will not have any chance if it won't add an API soon, which allows for a twhirl integration or other desktop and mobile apps. 
people won't stay just for fun, cause time is rare. 
twitter's downtime made a lot of people try out plurk but a lot left already again.
