About This Video
The unemployment rate in Hillsdale County Michigan reached a shocking 12.7 percent. This is an 18 percent increase from last year. According to the Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Growth the unemployment rate rose because of many factors including the weakness of the construction and manufacturing industry. Jim Rhein, a labor market analyst for the department, believes that the entire nation is getting hit hard by the economy, not just Hillsdale County. One company in the area that was hit hard was Hutchingson's of Reading, as it had to let go 50 employees since June. Klien Tools was also another company that was highly affected by the economy; it had to eliminate 100 jobs. According to Patrice Hudson-Martin, a manager at South Central Michigan Works, the downsizing of Klein Tools had a major impact on the Hillsdale economy. According to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth/Labor Market Analysis-South Central and Western Michigan, the unemployment rate in Hillsdale County was 12.7 percent, Lanawee County was 11.2 percent, Branch County was 9.9 percent, and USA was 6.0 percent. http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com
