Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) came to West Hartford Town Hall the evening of July 14th to address questions about the floodplain map revisions conducted this past September.
The revisions have a significant impact for homeowners, as federal law mandates that homes with mortgages in certain flood zones purchase flood insurance – sometimes at a substantial cost.
The forum, assembled by Congressman John Larson’s office, brought out residents from West Hartford, Avon and other surrounding communities. The two hour meeting gave an overview of what the new maps will mean for homeowners and offered residents an opportunity to voice their concerns.
FEMA says there is not a set period of time for the maps to be re-studied. They are adjusted as budgets allow. West Hartford’s first floodplain study was in 1974, followed by updates in 1987 and last fall. FEMA also told LocalOnlineNews.tv the maps will not be implemented for one year. 1 week ago 0 + -It seems that floodplain maps only get updated about once in every 15 years. With the environment changing constantly, perhaps it should get updated more frequently. If floods do occur, it can result in substantial damages. Asides from floodplain maps, neighbourhood maps has also proven to be very important for homeowners, foreigners, etc. Without it, it'd be very difficult for people to move from one location to the next.
