RTA Board Meeting July 1st, 2009

The meeting began after 11:30 a.m. to a packed room. General orders of business were covered along with two major issues. The first issue was Veolia's contract with the RTA which was renewed for 5 years. Either party can discontinue the contract with 180 day notice. After 5 years the contract can be renewed for another 5 years. The goal is to develop policies that result in more sustainable urban environments that provide a high quality of life. Also covered was the addition of three new streetcar lines which will span from St. Claude down Rampart Street. I understand these new lines will be named Desire, Rampart and Loyola. This film shows the section of the meeting that relates to the streetcar issue.

2009 Crescent City Classic at Mile 4

Swirl Wines provided great music and drinks for the spectators while Kentwood water kept the thirsts of all the runners quenched. Everyone spent time at Mile 4 of the Crescent City Classic as it ran through Faubourg St. John had a great time. April 11, 2009

The Boys are Back in Town

These 5 gentleman came by to check the door handles on the vehicles in our neighborhood. You can see two sporty type cars speed by them as they walk down the street. A white Nissan Maxima was stolen around the same time from the 2800 block of Grand Route. A similar vehicle goes by the cameras about ten minutes after they were checking door handles. 2009 Fortier Park Festival

The 2009 Fortier Park Festival was the best yet. Victor Bush was the DJ and kept everyone dancing. Not only was everyone treated to stellar performances by Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the "Sleeping Giant" but Dr. John stopped by to play a few sets. From the 1938 Federal Writers' Project of the WPA for the City of New Orleans: THE HELEN PITKIN SCHERTZ HOUSE 1300 MOSS ST., often referred to as the Spanish Custom House because it was supposed to have been a storage place for contraband goods confiscated from the pirates who ran their boats up the bayou, is one of the best preserved and most attractive of the city's old plantation homes. Built about 1784, it is one of the West Indian style type of plantation dwellings, broad galleries permitting free circulation of air through the original two rooms on each floor. The first floor is of plastered brick, with Pompeian brick columns supporting the gallery; the second story with its wooden gallery and slanting roof is contructed of wood. The two dormer windows in the American Colonial style were probably added later. A narrow outer stairway leads to the second floor at one end of the gallery. A floor of slate flagging overlays the original brick flooring, and an additional room has been added along the rear of the house."
