Does Email have a place in a Web 2.0 World?

I came across this article from dmnews.com, which was talking about what Email 2.0 really is: http://www.dmnews.com/E-mail-in-a-Web-20-world/article/116163/ I am just not so keen personally on the idea that Email may be considered a Web 2.0 tool, especially with the examples given in the article such as content notification or new members in a network? What do you reckon though, is Email a Web 2.0 tool, or is it forever just a waypoint to access the Web 2.0 community on the web browser
