Hi-tech fraudsters have begun taking advantage of the global financial turmoil. The US Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning saying phishing gangs were using the turmoil to extract valuable information from consumers.

Hi-tech fraudsters have begun taking advantage of the global financial turmoil. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a warning stating that phishing gangs were using the turmoil to extract valuable information from consumers. In the rapidly changing banking world where many institutions suddenly had new owner?s fraudsters pose as the new owners of banks or the federal agencies charged with oversight of struggling institutions. FTC has therefore urged consumers to be wary and not reply to e-mail messages or pop-ups that ask for personal or financial information even if they appeared to come from a bank. Consumers have also been advised to scrutinize bank and credit card statements for unauthorized withdrawals or transfers. The banks and other financial institutions caught up in the turmoil and topping the list of phishing targets include Chase, Wachovia and Bank of America.
Former MMD national secretary, Vernon Mwaanga, has appealed to party members to maintain the focus of the party's campaign for the forthcoming elections on issues which are important for the people of Zambia. He urged the party to not descend to the level of anarchists whose campaigns were based on character assassination.
