Inventors seek dying trees for
environmental experiment

little science experiment?
Do you have dying trees in
your yard? If so, Rob Matthies,
a modern-day Thomas
Edison, needs you.
A member of Vancouver
Gadgeteers and featured in
the media for his electric
truck running on revived
non-rechargeable batteries,
Matthies and his group is
embarking on a study to see
whether their horticulture
know-how can nurse dying
fruit and pine trees back
to health and make them
fl ourish.
“We’re a group of 15 tinkerers,
some of which live
outside Vancouver, working
and problem-solving together,”
described Matthies
of Vancouver Gadgeteers.
“(We) think that nothing’s
impossible, the same idea
of some people like Henry
Ford, who said something
like, ‘If you believe this
(idea) is possible, or impossible—
you’re both right.’”
“I recently realized that
the pines are dying fast
and so are other species,”
replied Matthies when
asked why the group is doing
this project. Matthies
had also studied the science
of tree growth before
and conducted workshops
to share his scientifi c fi ndings.
Having the needed
background knowledge, he
thought it would be a timely
experiment to do. However,
they’ll need
tree owners to
participate to
see if their new improved
technology will work.
“If we can get 10 equally
stressed fruit trees, we’ll
treat half of them, and
by harvest the difference
should be obvious,” he added.
Aside from comparing
the quality of the harvest,
they’d also like to see if the
technology can help sick
trees survive compared to
the untreated trees.
