It's six years since the Frontline Club first opened and members are warmly invited to celebrate in the bar, where canapes and drinks sponsored by Chivas Regal will be served from 7pm until 9pm. This is also a great night to introduce friends or colleagues who might be interested in applying to join so please do bring a guest.

There will also be a presentation of the Frontline Journalism Awards, which are supported by Canon: the Frontline Club Award and the Frontline Memorial Tribute, which are selected by a distinguished panel of judges.

All funds raised on the night will go to the Fixers Fund, which was set up in 2007 by the Frontline Club Charitable Trust following the deaths of Ajmal Naqshbandi and Sayed Agha in Afghanistan.
The fund raises money for the families of fixers killed or injured while working with the international media.

Spending up to £64 million on a country retreat or £40,000 on having sushi flown to you from London for lunch in Azerbaijan is small potatoes to the 100 or so super-rich Russians who have made the capital their home since the mid 1990s.
Mark Hollingsworth and Stewart Lansley will be at the Frontline Club to talk about their investigation into the extraordinary lifestyles of the Russian oligarchs who built vast personal fortunes in Russia and moved to Britain following the dissolution of the Soviet Union to spend them, aided by generous tax laws. What have been the consequences of this move of the super-rich to the capital and of Britain's remarkable compliance in this transfer of wealth?
Stewart Lansley is an award-winning television and radio producer and the author of a number of books including Top Man, a biography of Sir Philip Green.
Mark Hollingsworth has written for the Sunday Times, the Mail on Sunday and the Financial Times and is the author of Defending the Realm, Inside MI5.

Few modern conflicts are as attached to history as that of Israel and Palestine. Avi Shlaim, professor of international relations at Oxford will be in conversation with Shlomo Sand, professor of contemporary history at Tel Aviv University, at the Frontline Club for a seminal evening of discussion.
Avi Shlaim’s new book, Israel and Palestine focuses on the causes and consequences of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, while Shlomo Sand’s international best-seller The Invention of the Jewish People unravels the mythologised history of the Jewish people to find that the Israelites were never exiled from the promised land, and therefore have no right to return. The book concludes that the present-day Palestinian Arabs are the true heirs of the biblical Jews.
This is a once-only opportunity to hear these two eminent historians discussing their individual perspectives on the history - past and present - of Israel, and how their separate routes of academic enquiry have arrived at the same place: a two-state solution to end the fighting.

On 9 November 1989 the border separating Western from Eastern Germany was effectively opened, an event that became the symbol of the end of the Cold War.
For nearly three decades the Berlin Wall had kept East and West Berliners apart but at midnight East Germany's Communist rulers gave permission for its gates to be opened after hundreds of people converged on crossing points
On the 20th anniversary, journalists who were in Berlin that night will be at the Frontline Club to discuss their experiences and the impact of such momentous events since.

What do the troubled elections in Afghanistan and the continuing violence in Iraq teach us about the West’s attempt to export democracy around the world?
In his book Democracy Kills: What's So Good About Having The Vote BBC foreign correspondent Humphrey Hawksley criticises Western governments for their failure to draw up detailed plans for after the overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan and of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. With a panel of experts Humphrey Hawksley will examine the record of the West’s democratic mission and ask if there can be a transition from dictatorship to democracy without bloodshed.

Stuart Tootal will be at the Frontline Club to discuss his new book, Danger Close, a fascinating portrayal of his command of 3 Para and the conflict in Afghanistan.Awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and tipped to become a future head of the Army, Stuart Tootal’s resignation in 2007 shocked his senior commanders. The book is a candid account of his command of 3 Para, the first British Battle Group to enter the province of Helmand in 2006. Examining what it means to lead soldiers in battle, the former commander offers unique insight into military strategy and the key decisions that were taken, such as the decision to move north and to set up platoon houses. But Stuart Tootal also captures the essence of the fighting at the sharp end, examining the impact of fear and loss amongst his soldiers and their families, including interviews with over 100 soldiers held after he left his command. Now employed in the city and a respected defence commentator, Stuart Tootal also discusses the nature of the military covenant, the treatment of those wounded in the conflict, and lack of equipment.Join us at the Frontline Club to hear a senior commander’s account of the war in Afghanistan.

This On the Media event is in association with the BBC College of Journalism With: Richard Sambrook, director of the BBC's Global News division: Adrian Wells, head of foreign news, Sky News; Jean Seaton Professor of Media History at the University of Westminster's Communication and Media Research Institute

Fighting in Gaza and Sri Lanka and the recent unrest in Iran all raised questions about how journalists can do their job when governments deny access. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have also provoked concern that the Ministry of Defence is aided in the task of managing the flow of information by the fact that it is frequently impossible for journalists to reach and report from the frontline of the conflict. What challenges do conflicts such as those in Gaza and Sri Lanka earlier this year throw up, as well as the recent troubles in Iran, where Western journalists have been barred?Mobile phones, Twitter and email have provided invaluable information but their use not only throws up challenges for established practice in newsgathering, it also raises questions about what happens when new media tools aren’t readily available, such as in Sri Lanka when thousands of people fled and many were killed and injured during fighting between government troops and the Tamil Tigers. With the Israeli government relying more and more on public relations management and an increasingly sophisticated use of new media to get its message across, what is the role of the journalist in 21st century conflicts?
By frontlineclub

When Zainab Salbi’s father was chosen to be Saddam Hussein’s personal pilot the 11 year-old’s life was changed forever.
Her memoir Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam tells the story of growing up in the presidential household and the arranged marriage that took her to the US.
After leaving her abusive husband, Zainab Salbi set about fulfilling her childhood dream of helping women around the world.
She will be at the Frontline Club to talk about her remarkable life and the organisation she set up, Women for Women International, which has helped more than 153,000 women in nine countries including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Iraq.
Zainab Salbi was honoured by President Bill Clinton in 1995 for her humanitarian work and was elected as a Young Global Leader in 2007 by the World Economic Forum in Davos.
By frontlineclub
