The only downside is that it doesn't run 24 hours and it doesn't serve as wide an area as the NYC subways. That's really a non-issue, however, since the NYC subway goes to about a million places I would never consider setting foot in, and the DC Metro goes pretty much anywhere I would ever consider going to. Advantage: DC. Check out this video of what happens when a train is coming.
