The ancient Roman Colosseum could accommodate as many as 70 000 spectators. Entry was free and seating went according to class and social status - the higher your social status the closer you sat to the front.
Built in 80 A.D. and the opening ceremony of the ancient Roman Colosseum lasted 100 days and it is documented that more than 9000 wild animals were killed.
The original name of the ancient Roman Colosseum was the Flavius amphitheatre - named ofter the dynasty/family of Roman emperors who built the Colosseum.
Many believe the modern name comes from the 35m high Statue of Nero "The Colossus" that once stood outside the Colosseum.
