One type of disease that is common among several types of rodents including Syrian hamsters, is Tyzerr's disease. Most strains of Tyzzer's disease are unique to one particular species. The disease does not usually cross from one species to the next. Although, gerbils have been know to be infected with strains of the disease found in other rodents.
Among hamsters, however, the disease is highly contagious and is easily transmitted from one to the next. Unfortunately, the disease is usually fatal. In as short as 48 hours are symptoms appear, a hamster can die.
Some of the usual symptoms are diarrhea, dehydration, and a general lack of activity. In some cases, the sudden death of the hamster is the only way you know that something is wrong because symptoms are not always apparent.
Quarantine your sick hamster right away if you think she has Tyzzer's disease. Put her in a covered cage and take her to the vet immediately. This will control the disease from spreading. If your vet suspects that your hamster has Tyzzer's disease, antibiotics will generally be prescribed.
