It has the Xfce desktop, not GNOME. That's where the X in front of Xubuntu comes. :)

And the rat is Xfce's logo.

X is the windowing system that is used in most Linux distros, and lies underneath the desktop environment.

I'm going to need to learn more about XFCE desktops. It's very similar to Gnome and I like them both. Thanks for the info.

Great overview of Xubuntu, I love your passion for Linux. :)

would it be safe to install ubuntu along side windows vista ultimate 64 bit?

i want to do it as a boot option so i can go into windows or ubuntu as a choice

Yes, and it's very easy to do also. If you don't want to burn the ISO to a CD, go to http://wubi-installer.org/ download the program, install it, run it, choose the flavor of Ubuntu (Kubuntu, Xubuntu), type your username and password and you're ready to go. It will download the system for you and install it as a program inside your Windows partition. Next time you boot, choose Ubuntu and it will complete the final steps of the process. If you want to get rid of it, just go to Programs and Features, look for Ubuntu and uninstall it.

Thats very nice, running an os from a USB drive.

The USB drive is so much faster and easier than burning and using a live CD/DVD. I think its better than a virtual machine since I don't need to follow any configuration and think about my host system resources.

Correction - It's XFCE desktop. Just a little different from Gnome.
