Ubuntu 8.04 is very compatible with netbooks and laptops, 10.04 (april 2010) is going to be the same, just a tad more features.

You'll love some stuff, but won't like the ubuntu software centre that much. Not being able to install more than one application at a time is a pain in the ass.

LTS versions are focused more on compatibility, stability, reliability, security, etc.

Normal releases are focused on features, not the above. This is why LTS are recommended for machines that have blacklisted hardware that is known to cause MAJOR compatibility/reliability issues affecting stability.

As such, 9.04 is very laggy on my machine, 9.10 crashed and locked up right after i started an application. It's no good for my desktop.

On the other hand, it works great on my netbook. Issue is, the mic gets disabled when cheese/flash player is used. That resulted in a muted video the last time. I will have to downgrade to an older version of the ALSA drivers in order to use the mic/line and be able to record audio, avoiding mute videos.

9.10 sounds great. I'm using 9.04, myself. I first started using Linux this past July and I've really been loving the experience. After a good buddy of mine showed me what Linux can do and told me about it and after I read some great things about it on the web, I decided to try it. And I'm very glad I did. Luckily, my buddy collects operating systems and he went on ahead and burned me a copy of Ubuntu 9.04, which is what he's using as well.

Hi Darksoul313! I am so happy to hear of your positive user experience on Ubuntu 9.04. May I ask (1) what specific PC hardware are you running Ubunutu on and (2) have you encountered any bugs or annoyances with 9.04? Thanks again.

just an FYI .. X.04 and X.10 means April and October, that will always be the release months for Ubuntu .. can't wait til tomorrow !!!

Well, I'm running it on an HP Pavilion a705w series. The only bug I've enountered is when I use Format Factory though Wine. I keep getting a message saying an error has been encountered and FF has to close. Fortunately, though, this only happens after a successful file conversion, so I'm not worried about it. I also had a problem running Knights Of The Old Republic II. Installation was successful but when I tried to play the game, my desktop was blown up instead of the game itself loading. I think, however, it's because I need to get a better video/graphics card and more RAM. Other than that, my Linux experience has been terrific. Back when I first started, I made the beginner's mistake of running as root. Now, I understand the logic and reason behind running as a guest user.

another thing would it be safe to install unbuntu on a seperate partition with windows on the other partition

may seem a silly question, but i just dont want to fuck anything up having only 1 hard drive

can i run windows software on ubuntu? like some of my video editing apps ect? mainly im using sony vegas pro and movie maker and somtimes camtasia studio

Yes, you can. All is the Windows emulator called wine. The way I got it was by opening a terminal and typing:
sudo apt-get install wine.
There are some Windows programs I haven't been able to run but not many. Most of the programs I've tried to run through wine work great. Ultimate Paint & Format Factory, just to name a couple of Windows programs that I use on Ubuntu. Wine also comes with NotePad. I hope this was helpful.

Hi Thingsontheweb. Just got your message the moment you entered it. Today is day 2 for Ubuntu 9.10. Still a little buggy but nothing too bad. Like you and others might have said, that's what you get when you pick up the latest version on the first day. I'll try and do a full hands on review soon.

thanks Darksoul313. i havent used ubuntu yet will see about getting it today

No problem. Ubuntu is also one of the most user-friendly Linux distros out there.

You will have a blast with it. I am thinking of switching out Linux Mint 7 for the space for Ubuntu 9.10, but would rather wait since I wanted a working copy of Linux Mint 7 for so long. That working copy came for working on my Lenovo Laptop. This is proof to me that most Linux distros are not well suited for netbooks.

I think they're definately good at screwing over the uneducated, I'll agree with you on that!

I've used Windows 7 - it's not only expensive it is simply Vista, only fixed and dressed in a new tuxedo.

7=sa7an for computers.

New hardware? I DON'T THINK SO!!! Linux beats windows out by 900%

PS. 9.10 works right on my netbook, refuses to boot on my desktop.

Not surprised it's not compatible lol, but I will wait for 10.04. I can deal with 9.04.
