On December 24, 1998 at 10:40am The Sailing Ship Columbia came into dock to load the first passengers of the day.
An employee placed the docking rope on the cleat when the ship was approaching to fast to stop at the dock.
Ride procedures call for the ships captain to reverse the ship if it overshoots the dock so that it may approach at correct speed.
When the line became too taught it snapped the 8-pound cleat off of the ship like a rubber band sending it flying into the crowd of visitors causing two visitors critical injuries.<p> By <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/dldhistory/" >dldhistory</a></p>

The dragon has an unofficial nickname given to it by the cast and crew of the show. Its nickname: Bucky.
Original name for Fantasmic was Imagination but was changed since Disney could not copyright the name.
This was the first show in the US to use the new French water screens. In addition to being used for back projection, they can completely hide Tom Sawyer Island for set changes.
Film images are projected onto three massive mist screens which appear on the River. Each screen is 50 feet wide, 30 feet high, and 6 inches thick.
Features include lasers, fog effects, water fountains, fireworks, and fiber-optics technology.
Maleficent, the Sleeping Beauty sorceress, is transformed into a 45-foot dragon which breathes fire and ignites the surface of the River.
Five water barges are the means by which a 20-foot-tall Ursula and a 25-foot-long Crocodile move about the river.
Statistics:
Length of Presentation: 22 minutes
Stage: For the most part, Fantasmic! takes place on the water. The remainder of the production occurs on the new "rest area" in front of the Cider Mill on Tom Sawyer Island. While guests may visit here during the day, at night it is a performance space including a 20-foot by 20-foot trap door.
Crew: 50 per performance
Costumes: 341 costumes are necessary to operate seven nights a week.

It has been questioned why Walt Disney built the castle relatively small (it only rises 75 feet above the moat), but he actually had a very good reason. He recalled that the tyrants of Europe built huge, imposing castles in order to intimidate the peasents. Disney wanted his castle to be friendly, so it was built on a smaller scale.
When you are walking through the castle away from the statue, and you pass under the Disney Family Seal and you walk a few more steps until you're almost out of the castle, look down and there's a gold spike (survey marker) in the ground.

The first ride of this kind to be built in the United States.
The cable was 2,400 feet long with 44 gondolas.
The Skyway stations were equiped with a large digital meter to gauge wind speed. It usually flutuated between zero and three knots. If the meter hit twelve knots employees shut the ride down.
For dangerous situations, in the mid-1970s Disneyland installed speakers on the Skyway towers and microphones in the stations. By depressing the "All Ride" switch, operators could give announcements or warnings "from on high." Hosts were to use the device for emergencies only, since upon hearing a deep voice suddenly resounding from the sky, guests typically froze in terror. As such, the device became known as "the God Switch."
The buckets reached a height of 60 feet.
The drive mechanism was in the Fantasyland side with a 35 thousand pound ballast on the Tomorrowland side to keep the cable tight.
Skyway was built by Von Roll Iron Works of Bern Switzerland.
The first gondolas had fiberglass patio chairs bolted in them.
During construction of the New Fantasyland in 1984 the Skyway ran roundtrip only.

There are 64 human and 55 animal Audio-Animatronics in the attraction.
The first drop is 52 feet, at an angle of 21 degrees, and the second is 37 feet, also at 21 degrees. This was necessary to get the boats under the Railroad tracks, as the main show building is actually outside the tracks. Guests also get to go *up* a 90 foot waterfall at a 16 degree angle.
Near the end of the ride, the white haired prisoner is actually a replica of a janitor who worked there.
The fire effect: There is one peace of fabric hanging from a bar. Onto it is projected orange and red and yellow blinking light. Finally a Fan is added to blow the fabric slightly and it creates the fire effect. The fire marshal had Disney install an automatic shutoff in case of a real fire because the fake ones in the burning city looked so real.
The fog that drifts out from behind the boat in the "Battle" area. It is the Mee Fog effect. Water is shot through a small hole at 1000PSI, the hole is smaller than a hair from your head. Because it forced out so fast, the water condenses, just like real fog does. Hence the Mee Fog, slogan, "Real Fog"
The name of the ship in the battle scene is Sea Witch

There is a break room the size of a basketball court located in the top.
Matterhorn is 147 feet tall, exactly 1/100th size replica of the real mountain in Switzerland.
The attraction is based on the Disney film Third Man on the Mountain.
The Matterhorn is made of wood and steel with a plaster coating over a layer of metal mesh.
In 1978 an Adominable Snowman, ice caverns and glowing ice crystals were added.
Matterhorn mountain, started as a 20-foot-high pile of dirt. When construction crews were digging up the Sleeping Beauty Castle moat, they piled the dirt up to the right of the Sleeping Beauty Castle, on the border of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Workers leveled off the top, added a few park benches and young trees, and created a sparse picnic area, called "Lookout Mountain." Walt wouldn't leave it just dirt for long. He put one of the Skyway pylons on top and considered tying it into the Alpine theme by calling it Snow Mountain. Then, after a trip to Switzerland, he had a better idea: he wanted his own Matterhorn.
The Matterhorn was known during design as Snow Mountain, Mount Disneyland, Disneyland Mountain, Sorcer's Mountain, Magic Mountain, Fantasy Mountain, Echo Mountain.
The Matterhorn cost $1.5 million ( in 2006 dollars it would cost over $10.1 million) to build.
When you start up the computers for the Matterhorn the screen displays a messages which says, "Harold isn't going to like this."

Some of the original walnut trees that had been uprooted from the groves that covered the Disneyland site were rescued, then "uprooted" once again in the jungle -- planted upside down so their roots stuck up in the air -- to begin a new life simulating the bizarre and exotic jungle plants everyone expected to see in such a remote and uncharted jungle.
From a current Jungle Cruise skipper. There is a "Jungle Cruise Script" the day any one of us actually uses it, is the day The Jungle dies. The only time you might hear us do a "Standard Operating Procedure" (SOP) spiel, is when a supervisor is on our boat!!

The narrator's name is the late Paul Frees. His distinctive voice can also be heard in several other Disney attractions such as "Haunted Mansion" (narrator), and "Adventure thru Inner Space" (narrator).
In 1965, the figure constantly went into spasms in mid-performance. After thoroughly checking the robot's electrical system, maintenance realized that the show's power supply was fed by the same sub station that fed 600 volts to
the Monorail. Whenever the Monorail, ran in these sections, there would be a power surge, causing Lincoln to spasm. Surge suppressers didn't work, so Lincoln's power line was run under Town Square and linked to another sub station behind City Hall.
First introduced to guests at the 1964 New York World's Fair. This incredibly lifelike show stunned audiences with its realism, and marked the first time Audio-Animatronics -- an electronic animation and synchronization process -- was used to animate a human form.
Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln was inspired by Liberty Street which was to be located between Main Street and Tomorrowland but was never built.
This was the first Disney attraction to show on both coasts simultaneously: New York Worlds Fair and Disneyland
The First Lincoln figure built was shown at the Worlds Fair
The Second Lincoln figure built was a spare never shown to the public
The Third Lincoln figure built was a revised design and shown in the Worlds Fair second year
The Fourth Lincoln figure built was shown at Disneyland
Buddy Baker composed the original music for this attraction.
Voices:
Pre-show narrator - Pete Renoudet
Narrator - Paul Frees
Abraham Lincoln - Royal Dano

The Disneyland Monorail was the first operating monorail system in the Western Hemisphere and the first to cross a public street. When Walt built Disneyland, he wanted complete control over the steam trains, so that he could take them out when ever he wanted. Thus, he placed the steam trains, and then later the monorails under the ownership of Retlaw and leased them back to the park. In 1982, the family decided to sell the assets of Retlaw to the Disney Company, and a holding company, Walt Disney Incorporated was formed. Eventually, the steam trains and monorails became "officially" Disneyland's property.
The Monorail only ran around Tomorrowland from 1959 through 1961 when it was extended to the Disneyland Hotel.
Mark I trains capacity 82-3 cars per train monorail red, blue: 1959-1961

The trip from Tomorrowland to the Disneyland Hotel is more level and has more straight-aways, drivers can run the Monorail at full speed, 35 miles per hour. The return trip, though, has several curves and a seven-degree grade near the Submarine Lagoon, so drivers are instructed to maintain a speed of fifteen miles per hour.
Initial cost to build the monorail was $1.4 million (in 2006 dollars it would be over $9.4 million)
The monorail designer was Alweg which are the initials of the owner of the company: Axel L. Wenner-Gren
