I've taken some pretty awesome shots with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, but the 50mm f/1.8 blows it out of the water.

This might shock your brain, but the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II is only $90 on Amazon: http://moourl.com/k8y0b - Mine came with a lens hood (for blocking stray light at the sides in bright situations); I couldn't see that the one on Amazon does, but maybe other online stores specify that. Either way, if you get the lens, you will not be disappointed. :D
