you know you could open the external case get the drive out of there and put it in a desktop... they are all just internal drives inside casing

Yeah, I know. But I have an iMac and it isn't really the easiest thing to just swap a drive in there.

If a Drobo had firewire I'd definitely own one by now.

I'm thinking about getting one or two 500GB external drives for my trip to America. Any recommendations? I was thinking one Western Digital and one LaCie.

its nice to have something like this in case your enclosure goes dead: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3425970&CatId=1455 it takes SATA and regular drives and you just plug them into that and it's usb 2.0 into your computer
