2 years ago 0 + -VisualHub is awesome for compressing video! You can tweak so many more settings and the quality is a amazing (depending on the settings you use, of course)!
Final Cut Express/Pro is definitely a must-have if you want to get serious about editing. I'm not sure what limitations FCE has (as opposed to having FCP), but if you need any assistance I'd be glad to help.
