Interop_NY: Wrap up of Mobile Business Expo with general manager, Steve Wylie

At the end of the show today I spoke with Steve Wylie, general manager of Mobile Business Expo. I just wanted to get his insight on some of the hot issues discussed over the past few days. Not surprisingly, smartphones in the enterprise was a hot topic. It's been a top issue for many years even though we haven't seen adoption taken off at the pace of the talk. But we may be seeing a turning point simply because traditional apps are moving to handheld devices, there's an increase of smartphones in the marketplace, and the introduction of the iPhone and the number of applications available on that device. Other issues we talked about was the feasibility of completely unwiring your office and social networking on mobile devices is the new frontier.

I talked with Lenny Heymann, general manager of Interop, the guy who runs the whole show. He's been with the show for years so I asked his perspective of what was the buzz on the show floor. We talked about cloud computing, virtualization, SaaS, unified messaging, and mobility in the enterprise.

Interop_NY: Reimage.com fixes computers automatically and remotely

For years I've seen online solutions that offer the ability to scan to see what's wrong with your computer. Then it points you to drivers to fix it. Reimage.com offers a complete solution that will scan and fix your computer by downloading and installing necessary updates. It's a reactive software meaning you need to see something's going wrong to request a Reimage.com solution. Costs for a scan for a few users is about $40 per user and it goes down from there.

Interop_NY: Tandberg flexible telepresence solution

Tandberg's telepresence lets users divide up and change the view for its telepresence solution. It looks cool, but I wish they didn't have canned video and actually had live people you could interact with like what they did in the LifeStream presentation.

Vidyo is a video conferencing solution that has an intelligent video routing solution that has constant communications between the endpoint (the user) and the router always serving up only the video that's necessary for your endpoint, be it a giant HD screen or a small notebook computer, without transcoding which adds delay to the conference.

Interop_NY: PhoneFactor delivers two-factor authentication through your phone

PhoneFactor is a two factor authentication technology that works with your mobile phone. You log into a Web site and you get a call to your mobile phone. You acknowledge the call and it logs you into the Web site. With something you know (your password) and something you have (your mobile phone), they're two ways to full biometrics. The PhoneFactor rep said, they've got full biometrics on the roadmap as they're going to be including something you are, your voice.

I sat down for lunch with a few of the attendees and just asked them what they came to Interop for and what they've learned. Everyone was looking for something different: VoIP, VoIP security, Wi-Fi your business, unified communications, ethernet switching, cloud computing, virtualization, and a lot more.

Interop_NY: ImageStream's low cost routers and a gorilla

Yes, you can have a funny gag in a small booth that's fun for the attendees. ImageStream, a router manufacturer that competes directly with Cisco had a fun "dunk the Gorilla" game in their booth. The attraction was to point out, said the ImageStream representative, that you don't need to put up with the 500 lb gorilla, Cisco, to buy routers. You can actually get cheaper and reliable routers from ImageStream.

Interop_NY: Clay Shirky on managing his filters today to deal with information breakdown

After his keynote address, I spoke with Clay Shirky about his fantastic presentation at Interop_NY about when people keep obsessing over information overload. Shirky says the story of information overload will never end. What you need to do is look at the filters and if you feel inundated, see what filters are breaking down. I asked him about how he's dealing with his filters today. He breaks it down to look at process flow of other content and also inbound communications. It's a great follow up to his presentation.

Interop_NY: Polycomm's CMA 5000 for managing video conferencing across the enterprise

Polycomm who's one of the giants in video conferencing and telepresence was showing off its CMA 5000 or converged management application. This is a full video conferencing management application which also allows you to provision video conferencing to users at the desktop level.

Interop_NY: Palm shows off Treo Pro and how it interfaces with Redfly

Palm was showing off the new unlocked Treo Pro with GPS, Wi-Fi, and Windows Mobile 6.1. They also showed how it interfaces with the Redfly subnotebook. Actually, the instant on subnotebook just acts like a big keyboard and screen for the Palm device.

Interop_NY: Ozzy Osborne at Nokia?

I conducted an interview, I think, with an Ozzy Osborne look alike at the Nokia booth. When I think about mobile connectivity, I immediately think of half-dead rock stars. Actually, they had a fun presentation with a "rock" theme, plus I interviewed a mobile artist. I've never heard of or seen such a thing, but there he was. Watch what he does too.

Interop_NY: Mobile artistry and Nokia

Ever heard of mobile artistry? Neither had I, but I ran into Mobilinen, a mobile artist at the Nokia booth, the one they had over on the Web 2.0 Expo side. It was actually kind of a fun cool demo where he takes pictures of me and then throws it to a TV and then contorts the picture. Very cool and fun.

Interop_NY: A video tour of the Interop network

Mark Sullivan, one of the volunteers of the Interop network, the actual network that operates the wired and wireless network at Interop and also at Web 2.0 Expo show. It's the largest private temporary network in the world. Volunteers set it up, and all the equipment is donated, which is valued at around $12 million.

Interop_NY: McAfee's Reconnex delivers third generation data loss prevention products

I spoke with McAfee and Jim Glynn's Reconnex, their most recent purchase, about its new data loss prevention solution. Pretty cool tool that actually scans data and looks for sensitive and personal data like social security numbers and credit cards. It identifies it and watches it if someone tries to take it off the network through any port, including Bluetooth or even a USB key.

Interop_NY: Telepresence with LifeSize

Spoke with LifeSize about their telepresence solution which is a notch up from just standard videoconferencing. It truly makes you feel that all the people are actually in the room. The $40K solution includes three cameras with codec and the conferencing phone with 16 microphones. You'll need to get the HD monitors and the AMX control panel to manage the video system. Other features include the ability to dumb down to a traditional video conference and push content to a fourth screen for collaboration.

Interop_NY: Marie Hattar of Cisco on virtualization

I spoke with Marie Hattar of Cisco after her keynote speech about virtualization. She gave a great explanation about the business value and cost savings of virtualization, but addressed the top concerns people have regarding the current lack of standards, and security concerns.

Energy Camp NYC @ Interop_NY: Save energy costs by temporarily shutting off your redundant servers

I spoke to Jerry Cuomo, the CTO of the IBM WebSphere group who brought up some really radical techniques to saving IT energy costs like shutting down servers during slow times. I talked with him about that and some other ways to uncover power savings in the IT infrastructure, like reducing CPU cycles to process XML code.
