About

I'm a 55 year old female with a zest for life. I've been married for 23 years and wouldn't change a thing. I suffered from a serious illness for about 10 years but participated in a clinic trial in Holland that was successful. That was in 2004. Made me reassess my priorities and I decided to do what I loved which was Pilates and Yoga. In a year I became certified in both and as a personal trainer specialist. I opened my own studio in my home and things were going great for about 2 years. The bottom pretty much dropped out in March 2007. I had such bad pain in my back and right leg that I could hardly walk. It almost happened overnight. The long and short of it is that I have very advanced arthitis. The MRI radiologist and my neurosurgeons have said it is the spine of an 80 year old. Bummer. No one knows why. They don't "think" it was the five years of drug treatments. But that is when everything started to change. In June 2007 I had a L5/S1 microdiscectomy. Within a week I was pain free. Unbelievable. However as time went on it became apparent that all was not well. I really developed a strong scoliosis due to the vertebra crushing down on the right side. In Oct 2007 I had a L1/L2 laminectomy. That has been a really tough haul wrt recovery. The laminectomy certainly got rid of the intense pain that I was feeling but there is still pain. L2/L3 is a problem but I have to say that until the pain becomes unbearable I'm not going near a neurosurgeon... It became a problem and I was operated in late September 2008. So I'm recovering. I bought an elliptical so that I could get my cardio in and I have a Stott Reformer. I vary my activities but I always do either reformer work or some kind or matwork. I take a couple of days off a week. I'm finally getting my strength back but really fighting with the weakness from the scoliosis. I am currently investigating the Alexander Technique to see it that will help. So this is a blog about recovering from spinal surgery. My written blog is at http://fitnessfusion.wordpress.com Please feel free to visit. I post my viddler videos there. This is January 2009. I have a follow up appointment with the neurosurgeon. Anyone that has a question, please feel free to ask. This is about support. We can learn from one another.
