On the UN's High-Level Food Security Crisis Meeting in Rome

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes briefed the press today on the June 3 - 5 High-Level World Food Security Conference in Rome. Quick facts:- Estimated 850 million people in the world suffer from hunger - Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)- 180 countries involved pledged to reduce trade restrictions- Represents a consensus of all key agencies - World Trade Orgaization (WTO), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), countries involved, NGOs, et al- Plan could cost appx $30 billion per year- Called on international community to increase assistance to help countries most negatively affected by high food prices- Secretary-General (SG) spent two days in Rome, delivered key-note speech - issued a 3-page media advisory that lays out key components of agreement- Task Force website for full document http://www.un.org/issues/food/taskforce/

With the conveniently timed protests in Tibet, along with accusations that the Dali Lama is responsible for violence in Tibet, comes new scrutiny of China and it's human rights abuses. Why use an obscure video platform (Viddler) to host videos published on an under-utilized community platform (Pownce)?Why make video that originates from a cell phone, has poor sound, and shaky quality?Because we CAN. The point IS that the quality sucks, and the video is distributed to micro-communities. The act of distributing information is the point. When the US constitution was written, the amendment guaranteeing freedom from government suppression of speech was placed above all other freedoms. Humans are inherently social beings. We can, and should, communicate with each other; especially in a society that has allowed itself to be undermined by centralized and regulated mediums of communication.Next week I'm going to: the White House TV and Radio Correspondents Dinner in DC, the Pope visiting the United Nations, and Comic Con in Manhattan. ...and you're coming with me - shitty quality or not.

What Would You Ask The Pope

Dan on Pownce http://pownce.com/creepysleepy So the Pope'll be here at the United Nations next Friday. I DOUBT that I'll have a chance to get a question in, but on the off chance I do it should be an interesting, off the wall question. Right? Nothing TOO nutty, and certainly pertaining to potential policy, no? So what do YOU want to ask the Pope? And, of course, if you're in NYC, you should head to the UN on Friday the 18! And, a bit about this video: So, I'm trying to find some interesting uses for a mixture of Pownce, Viddler, the Nokia N95, and video commentary. I love the fact that I can shoot, edit, and upload from my phone. At the same time, I'm trying (painfully) to teach myself to suck less on camera, but still be sincere and off the cuff. I figure that by posting to Viddler (due to the cool video comment features and Wordpress plugin), then only to my friends on Pownce is a decent way to 'practice.' Yup.
