Maybe Friend Feed keep these 9 up front to make (And how 'sucessful'they are with Friendfeed' to make it look like anyone could build a huge following. This would be FAKE social proof sinec they are actually getting mass promoted. :-)

It seems to me that the current implementation is a really solid strategic decision in that it literally ports over the follower-base of those "high value" indivudals to FriendFeed (agreed tho, at the cost of the "discovery-engine" goodness.
