2 years ago 0 + -I had similar problems at first; tens of thousands of messages in "All Mail" and "Spam" were being downloaded. I went into Gmail and deleted (really really deleted, not just archived or put into Trash) all my old mail, then reset Mail.app and started over. Now it works.
