Having been in a company where I worked 20 hours a day (because I loved the work) for 5 years to see "average people" getting the same global benefits and raises as me, I can see his point.

Honestly we need to take a real look at how companies compensate people... this isn't middle school soccer, where you get a medal for showing up and until we don't treat everyone equal, but treat them "right" then "great people" are not going to want to work with "average people"
