Oh, I always thought that those were the ends of toilet plungers. At least that's how they make it look in movies!

Plungers are indeed just the rubber part of a toilet plunger, but that's the not the only way to mute a brass horn. :) There are bucket, cup, practice, and straight mutes, to name the most commonly used ones. Plungers aren't just used for muting the horn, but also for a wah-wah effect by opening and closing the plunger over the bell, where as mutes just stay in place most of the time (no wah-wah'ing). :) Hope that helps clear it up!

haha! I play the trombone and the euphonium too! "my chops are busted" use to be my phrase when i couldnt play anymore!
