When a raccoon was spotted above one of our snow leopard enclosures, BCR staff and volunteers sprang into action! The raccoon had a plastic jar stuck on it's head and was very distressed, Scott managed to net the raccoon and the jar was dislodged. The raccoon was fine and was released far away from the big cat enclosures!

LIGER at the Dentist!

Lion + Tiger = LIGER! freckles was rescued from a failed backyard sanctuary in mississippi Dec 2008. 16 year old Freckles is one of the oldest Ligers around but she is one of the most recent arrivals to Big Cat Rescue. At the time of her rescue we could see a big hole in her jowl, and feared that it would lead to her demise, but she was in such bad shape that we just couldn't risk knocking her out to get a better look. Being a cranky old cat, she wasn't about to let us get a good look any other way either. She was given antibiotics in case it was just an injury, but now that she has become more calm in her new setting we can see that the problem stems from several broken teeth. Caged cats will often break off their teeth trying to chew their way out of their prison cells and when she was left behind to die in Mississippi she probably did just that. The dental work was completed on Freckles without any problems and she as made a full recovery. Let's hope that the dental as taken away her pain and she will have no more problems in the future. 3 Legged SERVAL Rescued!

!!!SERVAL RESCUE!!! Help us name our newest resident, please leave suggestions for this female serval! An African Serval was limping along in the Arizona desert until she collapsed alongside a road. She had almost completely given up the will to live. She was probably a pet or perhaps used in the hybrid breeding scheme that has become all the rage where Servals are bred to domestic house cats to produce Savannah Cat hybrids. The domestic cats are often killed in the process. The kittens sell for thousands of dollars, but when they mature they typically spray and bite and make awful pets. The hybrids are usually discarded by the time they are two or three years old. Big Cat Rescue is located in Tampa Florida, during the summer months it gets extremely hot, so to help our cats beat the heat we make them popsicles! For the smaller cats we make bloodcicles, chickcicles and sardini martinis, but for our larger residents we make super size popsicles for them to enjoy! The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also known as CITES, is an international treaty designed to control and regulate international trade in certain animal and plant species that are now or potentially may be threatened with extinction. Currently, 175 countries, including the United States, are parties to CITES. The Convention calls for biennial meetings in which one of the functions is to consider amendments to the lists of species possibly threatened with extinction. We have a unique opportunity to provide public comments to 2 items related to big cats that the United States plans to submit for consideration. First, the US continues to support a strong stance on tiger conservation and efforts to address illegal trade in tiger and other Asian big cat parts and derivatives. Of course, Big Cat Rescue fully supports this position. Second, a proposal exists to remove Bobcats from the current list of protected species. BIG CAT RESCUE DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS POSITION. Please write a letter to our CITES representatives, and let them know that you support strong tiger conservation, but you insist that they keep the Bobcat under Appendix II Protection. COUGAR CHEETAH - Big Cat Success!

The June 17, 2009 hearing of the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission set a record for the number of animal lovers to attend and speak up at their meetings. Carole Baskin as been attending these meetings since 1994 and rarely do more than two or three animal advocates show up but at this meeting we counted more than 40 people who spoke in favor of tougher laws to regulate the trade in exotic animals. We hope this is the beginning of a trend and if so it will shape the future. Wild animals will no longer be exploited, abused, neglected and abandoned if the public continues to speak up for them The best news is that Cougars and Cheetahs have been uplisted to Class I which means that they can no longer be kept as pets in Florida. Those who already own these cats as pets can keep them, but cannot breed or replace them unless they meet the higher requirements for owning Class I animals which includes 5 acres of land, stronger cages and they cannot use them for petting sessions after they reach 45 lbs., so fewer people will be mauled by them.
