Carole Baskin as been attending these meetings since 1994 and rarely do more than two or three animal advocates show up but at this meeting we counted more than 40 people who spoke in favor of tougher laws to regulate the trade in exotic animals. We hope this is the beginning of a trend and if so it will shape the future. Wild animals will no longer be exploited, abused, neglected and abandoned if the public continues to speak up for them The best news is that Cougars and Cheetahs have been uplisted to Class I which means that they can no longer be kept as pets in Florida. Those who already own these cats as pets can keep them, but cannot breed or replace them unless they meet the higher requirements for owning Class I animals which includes 5 acres of land, stronger cages and they cannot use them for petting sessions after they reach 45 lbs., so fewer people will be mauled by them. TJ was rescued from Savage Kingdom that was a well known breeding facility producing what we call "throw away tigers" so many tigers are born lame and cross eyed from the inbreeding that's required in order to produce white tigers. Whilst we were neutering TJ we took the opportunity to do a full examination of him which included taking blood for analysis and giving him an I.D microchip. Armed with only a flashlight you continue on at the urging of your guide and notice that you are the main attraction to all the wild animals living at Big Cat Rescue. You see hundreds of glowing eyes, all focused on you and as you pass the enclosures you hear the rushing of the great cats as they make a pounce for you in the dark. You'll hear the roaring of tigers, the screaming of cougars and the caterwauling of bobcats, lynx and more as you try to get back to the safety of your car. It's an adrenaline rush to turn the tables and become the hunted rather than the hunter. It's an experience you will remember and talk about for years to come. Previously this tour was only offered to expedition guests, but due to popular demand, we decided to offer this exciting tour on the last Friday of each month and invite all brave souls to enjoy this awesome activity. We then stitched the incisions open so no further problems would occur. Windstar had been relocated to another enclosure the previous week, so we could renovate his. So when he woke up we transferred him back into his new and improved living space for him to enjoy! This rescue was made possible by the support of IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) and by all of our supporters who helped us raise the money to rescue these cats. As you can see in this update all four cats are doing very well and are enjoying their one acre enclosure complete with pool and long grass to play and hide in! The experience is divided into two parts: Enrichment (making toys and treats for the cats and watch as a keeper hands out what you've made) and Operant Conditioning featured in this video, which is a training session between the cats and a keeper.
