Beach Walk 738 - Version Control

A few weeks ago I talked about updating the database. And there is a tricky second aspect of that. If you are updating an old version of the database, then you miss out on stuff! This happens, sadly, all the time when more than one person has access to a master database. They work "locally, make a bunch of changes, and everything looks cool. But if they don't connect and send their updates to the main source, then everyone else who uses it is missing something. Or sometimes the db gets moved, and you didn't know, so you are syncing with an old version. Beach Walk 735 - Spring Bikini Edition

I've been conducting a very lackadaisical campaign on Beach Walks over the past three years to change attitudes about bikinis. We mostly approach them from the point of view of bikini watchers, not bikini wearers. It is so loaded with who should or should not wear one. Well here in Hawaii they are ubiquitous! No matter what kine body you have - it just feels good to have the warm water of the Pacific and the warm sunshine wash over you. Wayne Dyer once said something very apropos here: "What you think of me is none of my business." So if you find yourself wanting to wear a bikini this summer, it just may be that all that needs to get in shape is your mind! Beach Walk 732 - The Stress of New Things

I love reiterating things many of us experience with the goal of going easier on ourselves. This episode is a reminder of how stressful it can sometimes be to learn new things, as in the case of my nephew Tyler who is learning to drive. To remember that the brain and quite possibly also the physical circuitry is at work learning new patterns. To realize that some old patterns may be in the process of expanding or being dismantled. And to go slower rather than faster. To repeat as often as needed. To expect delays and lurches forward too!

Beach Walk 717 - Are Your Responsible for Your Subconscious?

I did a show on the latent racist tendencies many of us have a few weeks ago, Beach Walk 707, talking about how deeply racism (and other "-isms") reside. Exploring a little further, if we resist the notion and feel guilty or go into denial, then it lingers. Maybe not feeling so burdened or responsible for things before our time can free us to notice when we are acting under the influence, and choose to act differently now.

Beach Walk 716 - Volunteering to Vacation

More and more brave souls are leaving their "known worlds" for life as an adventure, the kind without a job for a safety net. Decades ago the book appeared, "Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow" that really knocked loose some hard -formed notions. Still, barely one generation has grown up with that message, so it has barely made a dent in our global consciousness. Here are some examples of people who are using volunteering as a step in that direction.

Beach Walk 715 - Life is not so linear pt 2

A good example of the non-linear-ness of the process of change is Dr. James Prochaska's, Stages of Change Theory. He describes 5 stages of "change readiness" - each of which is responsive to certain processes or approaches. People who successfully change a behavior, will not usually progress through the stages in a straight line, but more in a spiral, relapsing some and then moving forward again.

When in fact, we hold the keys, and they are merely in our thoughts, not so much an external reality. Beach Walk 689 - Making Money

I read a study showing that people who were paid to do a task over time lost interest in the task. It's easy to generalize about money form that, but also in play is the idea of external motivation vs. internal motivation. Some people love money and are highly motivated to get more of it. (You can find them on Wall Street LOL.) Others, not so much. What about you, do you like money?

Beach Walk 686 - Does Experience Matter?

One of the big myths floating around is that a person's position or title is comparable to their competence. Not always true! Like me, I am sure you can think of examples. Many choices in life really do boil down to personal preferences. "Who you know" really does matter, and that is not always a bad thing. This turned out to be relevant in a discussion I was having with several other women speakers. We are all going to be presenting at BlogWorldExpo next week, where there keynote speakers are all white male. It's an old issue, but one that is not all that easy to address.
