About This Video
Here's some history... One fine day Sun Microsystems visited Apollo to try to get us to adopt their windowing standard called NEWS. Since they had already standardized the network (NFS), we panicked and looked around for a competitor to NEWS.
We soon discovered a project at MIT called X-Window, and that it had already been ported to Apollo by U Mich. Together with the help of HP, we quickly organized this press conference. As a result, NEWS was dead. MIT never knew what hit them. X Window is now an integral part of Linux, with some regret because NEWS was likely technically superior.
But, it was a tactical win.
