Being terrific at one or maybe two things has clearly brought success to many in our community, mostly when the collaboration of complementary skills you described comes about. In web dev/des, it is hard to be great at many aspects. In my own experience, working in a medium sized company environment (in a company without a lot of money), it has paid me to be, instead, a generalist (perhaps a semi-specialist); the flexibility was, in this environment, worth as much as a specialty would be elsewhere. This would not be so in any highly technical environment, in my opinion.
