The Warsaw Gay Pride and its importance in the European context
"I will ban the demonstration...There will be no public propaganda of homosexuality".
WARSAW EQUALITY PRIDE 2007
This is what Lech KACZYNSKI, the then Mayor of Warsaw and now President of Poland said in a 20 May 2005 interview with Gazeta Wyborcza concerning the ban he had imposed on the Equality Pride of 2 years ago. His decision did not stop the organisers of the Foundation for Equality (Fundacja Rwnosci) from holding the peaceful demonstration in 2005, while in the meantime the Polish appellate bodies (the Local Government Appellate Board and the Mazorwsze Governor) and even the Constitutional Court quashed the decision of the Mayor. The Warsaw Equality Pride took place in 2006 without major problems. On the 3rd of May 2007 the European Court of Human rights issued a judgment on the 2005 ban on the Warsaw Equality Parade, and found the Polish authorities guilty of having violated Article 11 (freedom of association and assembly), Article 13 (right to an effective remedy) and Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination). ALDE had the pleasure to invite and hear Robert BIEDRON of Campaign against Homophobia during the hearing Sophie In't VELD and Jeanine HENNIS-PLASSCHAERT sponsored in the European Parliament for the ALDE group, as well as other LGBT NGOs from different countries where Gay Prides are problematic.
