I TOTALLY agree with this. I planned my novel out so completely beforehand that my characters fought my desires to do certain things once I started writing.

Hmm yeah that could be true. I tried to go check the rules last night but the website was overloaded with people and all I found was "What if I get to 50,000 words and haven't finished my story yet?" and it didn't mention "What if it's November 30th and I'm at 50,000 words and haven't finished my novel yet?" So it may not be officially against the rules, but the goal is to write a novel in November so I took that to mean from beginning to end. There may not be anything official that actually says you have to get to the end in November - I could just be making things up...

The official thing with NaNo is to write 50,000 words on a new novel. Given that most novels are at least twice that length, the objective is not to *finish* a novel in November, but to get 50,000 words written on that novel. Now, 50,000 words *can* be considered a novel, but it's on the extremely short end of the spectrum.

You can finish the novel at any point: NaNoFiMo, NaNoEdMo, etc.
