Anyone who says this isnt real is an idiot, simple research finds Reha Hutinof the Thirty Million Friends foundation sent a film and photographic crew to the French controlled Island of Reunion to get photographic evidence of this being done. It's already been proven and is being brought up as a major issue in the country of France. This is so fake. The dogs in the video is footage from a vet's clinic, there was an accident with a fish hook. It saddens me to see how many people just accept what they see on a screen as "the truth". You people place more importance in quickly responding to some random video, then researching what it's about. There were a few that doubted whether this video is genuine, but their comments were rated "bad". So, asking questions is bad, but spouting "I will rip off arms of the people who do this and beat them with it" is OK? Ahh, I guess they should rather use the average commenter here as shark bait. To be quite honest, in my opinion, this is a load of crap. Yes, it would break your heart because dogs are such loving creatures we call pets and we care for and love with every piece of our hearts. But did it ever occur to anyone who fell for this that if this really happened, wouldn't it be in the news if it was such a big issue? Wouldn't it be sorted out already, if it had happened in the past? I have 4 dogs who I take the best care of. I do not buy any products made from animals (furs, leather) and I do not buy from any companies that test on animals. I don't eat red meat or pork... I only chicken and fish (I feel guilty enough about that). I volunteer with animal rescue and sign as many petitions as I can get my hands on. Well said justjason! I have seen some horrific acts toward animals in many countries and might I add allot have been in well established economic regions. Cultural ritual only accounts for a very small portion of these – it is consumerism and greed that ultimately perpetuates these acts. Animal welfare costs money and that is about what it comes down to. The choice is yours, as an individual, as a consumer, to take a stand and not just support these acts of barbarism on the forums but make an active contribution and get involved. It can be as little as changing a product you use for another.

I think it's easy to sympathize because they are depicting companion animals. But while this is barbaric, it is not a widespread practice and isn't tolerated by the French government. What is most despicable is the sheer number and widespread cruelty animals face as human bait. From the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, to the medications we take, the amount of painful suffering and disgusting living conditions these animals must endure makes us all as bad as those fishermen who use live dogs as shark bait. Do more than just express your disgust in a comments section. Become active in the animal rights movement. If you don't believe animals have rights then at least admit that animals feel pain and that no living creature should have to endure what is begin done. Get involved!!

I cant believe people have been sucked in by this, the dog in the vid has not been dragged behind a boat for shark bait, the hook would rip out of its mouth. There has only been 2 reported cases of people using live dogs, the fishermen use dead dogs that are culled on the island. Also its only a small number of amature fishermen who do this, its not wide-spread or common, dont believe everything you see at face value. Do some research.

Yeah, pretty nasty stuff, but I've read a bit about this, and Reunion Islands government have admitted that it does go on, however, not among the professional fisherman, this practice is down to a small handful of amatuer individuals, and the Reunion cops are after them. if you read my comment above, i never said anything about this whole thing being fake, i remember saying "fake video". Im planning a trip with my family to south africa after the next season, would you be complaining if i used live seals for bait? i believe there part of the ecosystem yes? Also theres a fox on my property thats been kind of annoying, maybe i should use a live cat in a trap? also part of the same eco system? Im sure both of these would work a treat. Im just trying to say that if they wernt cute and cuddly nobody would be complaining. ill keep you posted for the cat video.

so how come if this whole thing is 'fake' there have been many articles published on this theme. even the national geographic, who 99.99% of the time is an extremely reliable source published a short article on it. there had apparently even been investigations undertaken by the government, who within 1-2 hours found 5 fishers using live cats and dogs as live bait. and there are still others contradicting that it is happening? using a mullet is at least more natural. it's called an ecosystem. dogs and cats are in my knowledge NOT sea animals, thus would not under normal circumstances be eaten by sharks, whereas mullets would.

6 things that immediatly came to mind when i saw this FAKE video. Im a fisherman myself (tuna) but we deal with a shit load of sharks. 1. Its not the right rig to pull sharks. 2. If its legal then why are the dogs in a vet and not in a sharks gut? 3. If this were genuine they would bait their lines just before they throw them (therefore we wouldnt see a dog in a veterinary clinic getting it removed). 4. This sounds bad but if you were going to rig a dog to a line, you would push a gang hook down its throat so the shark actually gripped the hook (sharks attack the middle, it would miss the hook). 5. You wouldnt use a sick dog. 6. Why is using live mullet (my preffered bait for sharks) better than using dogs? Cute and fluffy is not a valid answer.

so lets just assume that the dog manages to stay on the line. Its hooked in the tip of its nose and one of the barbs is in the dogs mouth covered by a pretty solid bone structure (i know a shark could easily crush its head but i use chickens and its hard enough to hook them). The shark would attack the body of the dog (the part under water) and and the hook would tear right out. The fisherman would be left with nothing, this is about as genuine as Pams tits. Who gives a shit anyway? Ive been using live mullet hooking sharks for 15 odd years, just cuz its got hair and four legs it cruelty to animals right?

I have to be sceptical, just because there's sad music, compelling words a dog with hooks stuck in it and a second or so of shark footage spliced in doesn't prove anything. The dog could have had a rough encounter with a tackle box or it could have been an isolated and/or unrelated incident.

so are you saying if you were a beggar you'd rather be used as shark bait, than live? these dogs have a right to live just as much as any human. and if they were say really sick, at least the fishers should show them the respect of putting them down in a painless way before using them as shark bait.

Well I personally think that there is nothing wrong with this. The people obviously have found this to be the most effective form of fishing for sharks. The dogs used are only strays, so they would only be living a worse life if they were left on the streets. This is putting them out of their misery. Plus they are probably fishing for food, so they are just trying to survive. A persons life is way more important then a short suffering of an animal. You people aren't looking at the whole story.

Actually, once in the water, the dog becomes weightless. Thus this hook would easily pull him through the water. Plus, you can't possibly tell how strong a hook + line are just by looking at this video. It could very possibly be a 60kg line, and that would easily do the job. Its time you WOKE UP

You dont know anything about fishing, who said they drag them and if they do it would be slowly. the dog would struggle against the pain and try to get back to the boat there for attracting a big fish. I am totally against this horrible thing and dont know how anyone would do such a thing. whats the difference between using a dog or a fish? They are both living creatures.

Wow, I am not surprised about this as I recently watched a program about sharks. There is a lot of money in sharks for their fins. They basically torture the shark as well by cutting off its fins and throwing it back in the water. We should all ban any shark cartilage products. Apparently shark cartilage is a rich delicacy. The poor countries are doing this and well you know "greed" takes over. There is also a shark mafia on the islands near Philippines. Any cruelty to any living thing is sad sad sad.
