Jade and Julep Fledge - Dec. 4, 2009

Dec. 4, 2009 Jade and Julep fledged at about 9:48 am. Phoebe was chasing a squirrel in the background and the chicks were startled. Squirrel shows up in lower right at beginning. Fledge at 1:40. Squirrel exits upper right at end.

Hummingbird Chick Rescue [short version]

June 3, 2009 24 day old Jewel fell out her nest. She clung to the nest for 10 minutes before falling to the ground. It took a while to find the tiny thing, and she didn't like being picked up. Before putting her back in, I used a teaspoon to remove a nonviable egg. It took a few tries to get her back in the nest. She would quickly scramble out the other side and into my waiting hand. Finally, she quit fighting and stayed in the nest when I set her there. She didn't move for 10 minutes until mom finally landed next to her and fed her. [trimmed 6 minutes of her clinging to the nest]

Hummingbird - Mites Boarding

June 13, 2008 The nest was infested with mites. This video (16 Minutes sped up 8x) shows the mites lining up in an orderly fashion on the chicks beak, ready for the next feeding. As soon as Mom's beak touches the chick's beak the mites swarm onto the mother. Speculation at Hancock Forum is that they are just getting transportation. The birds don't seem to be irritated or too itchy. If you know anything about this, please post a comment.

April 7, 2008 A hummingbird chick takes her first flight. She needed a little shove from her sibling. I just set the camera on the window sill to see if I could catch a feeding and voila. [Canon SD400]
