Have you ever read Walking on Water by Madeleine L'Engle? it's her thoughts on faith and art, and she goes into this idea a lot. Excellent book.

I don't think I have, though I am quite fond of A Wrinkle in Time. I'll have to check it out; thanks for the referral!
