REST is a term coined by Roy Fielding in his Ph.D. dissertation to describe an architecture style of networked systems. REST is an acronym standing for Representational State Transfer.

This video explains the concept of a Service Oriented Distributed Architecture (SODA), which is, in short, a system of federated user agents. Also, it briefly touches on Document Orietented Programming (DOP) a RESTFul programming pattern.
