The addictive online role-playing game World of Warcraft counts 11.5 million subscribers worldwide--unexpectedly building a dedicated group of book-readers as well.

During New York City's Comic Con, we caught up with Chris Metzen , one of the game's creators and VP of Creative Development for the game's parent company, Blizzard Entertainment. Metzen explained how the video game company also created a popular series of novels at Simon & Schuster.

After 25-years as a novelist and comic book scribe, Ron Fortier has launched a pulp fiction revival.

His company, Airship27, has revived old pulp fiction characters in brand new novels, bringing back the characters that helped America cope with the Great Depression. In his career, Fortier has worked on The Hulk, Popeye, Rambo, The Green Hornet, and The Terminator comics.

As the publishing recession deepens, the burden of promotion will fall increasingly on the author's shoulders.

Speaking directly to publishers, authors, and readers bewildered by book promotion in the age of Twitter and Facebook, mediabistro.com founder Laurel Touby told the Tools of Change audience how to build a better book party.
How To Get Video Gamers To Read Books

Since the dawn of the video game era, countless critics have warned that the genre would destroy reading. Video gamers have built the career of novelist Eric Nylund. His writing took off after he wrote for Microsoft's smash hit video game, Halo.

He's written Halo books, stand-alone novels, video games, and maintains an interactive blog. Most recently, he finished the fantasy novel, Mortal Coils. In this exclusive interview, he told publishers how to reach the elusive video game-playing readers.

GalleyCat prowled the teeming, costumed crowd of true-believers at Comic Con this year, uncovering some vital intelligence about this flourishing corner of the publishing industry. To see more video interviews with innovators, see a Quirk Books editor talk about zombies, Jane Austen, and viral hits.
By Mediabistro

Quirk Books accidentally created a viral blockbuster last week after the literary web embraced their upcoming title, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

On April 1st, the book will give Jane Austen's classic novel a horror-show twist. At the NYC Comic Convention, GalleyCat recently caught up with an editor at Quirk, finding out more about great zombie literature.

GalleyCat prowled the teeming, costumed crowd of true-believers at ComicCon this year, uncovering some vital intelligence about this flourishing corner of the publishing industry.
By Mediabistro

The fledgling agency, Movable Type Literary Group, just scored two book deals this week. GalleyCat caught up with founder Jason Allen Ashlock for an exclusive video interview about his new deals.

The first deal was for screenwriter Stephen J. Rivele. This 20-year Hollywood veteran worked on scripts for the films Ali and Nixon . His book will be published by St. Martin's Press.

The agency also secured a deal with HarperCollins to republish the out-of-print The Making of the President series by the late political journalist Theodore White. That four volume series followed presidential elections from 1960 until 1972, revolutionizing political journalism.
By Mediabistro

Publisher Drew Nederpelt explains how a CNN anchor delivered a book in two weeks. CNN's Chief Business Correspondent Ali Velshi wrote Gimme My Money Back for the publisher during the financial crash, and released it last week.

Sterling & Ross has built a reputation for delivering rapid-fire books, this time beating other publishers to the punch with a consumer guide to surviving the financial meltdown.
By Mediabistro

On Saturday, GalleyCat mingled at the launch party for author Steven Johnson's newest book, The Invention of Air .

Held in a spacious Brooklyn Heights apartment with ceiling-high bookshelves, actors, literary types, and journalists joined the bestselling author for homemade mojitos . The new book reexamines the life of 18th Century scientist and thinker, Joseph Priestley --who the DailyKos called a prototypical science blogger.

GalleyCat caught up with Johnson--author of Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter--for this video interview about digital books, the state of publishing, and Google.
By Mediabistro

As marketing budgets shrink and publishers reduce staff, it's hard for a first-time author to get traction in a crowded literary field.

GalleyCat caught up with debut author Josh Bazell to talk about the campaign for his brand new book, Beat the Reaper. His publisher sent this novelist and medical doctor on a pre-sell tour, visiting booksellers around the country before his book even hit shelves.

In this exclusive video, Bazell shares his experiences from the pre-sell tour.
By Mediabistro

Today, Borders announced they will not be shipping unsold books back to HarperCollins, forging a new sort of book deal between publisher and distributor.

Yesterday, GalleyCat caught up with HarperStudio president and publisher, Bob Miller. In this exclusive video, Miller explains how HarperStudio hopes to cut a similar deal with more bookstores and readers can see some of HarperStudio's first titles.

The Wall Street Journal has the story:

"Under the terms of the deal, the nation's second-largest bookstore chain by revenue will get a deeper discount on initial orders of books published by the new imprint of News Corp.'s HarperCollins Publishers -- 58% to 63% off the cover price, instead of the usual 48%. In exchange, Borders won't return any unsold books to HarperStudio, instead probably discounting them in the store."
By Mediabistro

As a number of major publishing houses made dramatic lay-offs last week, literary agents around the city pondered what the disaster meant for their clients.

Peter H. McGuigan , founding partner at Foundry Literary + Media, had books pending at a few of the houses that suffered cuts. Last Friday, he told GalleyCat how his firm is dealing with the recession.

Since he opened Foundry a year-and-a-half ago, McGuigan has made headlines for the bestseller Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World , and built an impressive client list that includes Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy.
By Mediabistro

Here's a description of the new novel: "Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospitals psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she literally has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talkand the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard."
By Mediabistro
