How to Build a Fictional Twitter Feed

Earlier this year Carri Bugbee won an Shorty Award for gaining over 13,700 Twitter followers for an imaginary character--writing tweets about the life of Mad Men character Peggy Olson. GalleyCat caught up with Bugbee at O'Reilly Media's Twitter Boot Camp, where experts pondered this new social networking tool. In this exclusive interview, Bugbee tells publishers how they can build Twitter campaigns for imaginary characters--including a speculative riff on a Twitter feed for a Michael Connelly character. Besides writing about the adventures of a young secretary in New York City, Bugbee works for Big Deal PR, building social media campaigns for different companies.
By Mediabistro

Artists, Writers, and the Great Depression

Until June 20th, the New York City gallery has an art show collecting a series of nudes painted by Alice Neel during the Great Depression. One GalleyCat editor put together this short video about Neel, the Work Projects Administration (WPA), and New York bohemians in the 1930s--using actual WPA footage shot during the period.

NOTE: The three paintings in the video come courtesy of the Zwirner & Wirth exhibit, and feature brief images of nudity. Neel befriended numerous writers in the 1930s, including poet Kenneth Fearing and editor Malcolm Cowley, and the WPA created work for this group of artists. While Neel's official site provides an extensive biography, the book "Alice Neel: Paintings from the Thirties," edited by Wayne Koestenbaum, collects many of Neel's most gorgeous works from the Great Depression and the WPA.

After the Great Depression, hundreds of works of art--from state guidebooks to precious paintings--were literally scrapped. As we struggle through our own economic crisis, many are revisiting these lost artifacts. Garrett County Press recently republished the New Orleans City Guide written by WPA-contracted writers and the Zwirner & Wirth exhibit sheds more light on the period.
By Mediabistro

Author Toni Morrison published her first novel in 1970, and her career has spanned a number of milestones for civil rights, technology, and politics. In this short video, the Nobel Prize winning novelist talks about writing in the age of President Barack Obama and the Internet.

Earlier this week, GalleyCat covered the National Coalition Against Censorship's launch of the Free Speech Leadership Council. Morrison spoke at an intimate event at the book-filled apartment of Council chair and former HarperCollins CEO Jane Friedman . The new council is a collection of community leaders working together to combat censorship around the country. All attendees left with a copy of 'Burn This Book,' an anthology published by HarperStudio and PEN American Center.
By Mediabistro

During the Mediabistro Circus, GalleyCat caught up with Eileen Gittins , founder of the on-demand publisher, Blurb. In this video interview, Gittins shared her company's newest project, The Obama Time Capsule--a customized book that allows readers to mix their own content alongside images from more than 140 professional photographers and essays from General Colin Powell , Joe Klein , Auma Obama and Arianna Huffington. Here's more from book's release: "HP's print-on-demand technology enables each copy of The Obama Time Capsule to be personalized with photos and text added by each book buyer. The book is then printed through Blurb's global print partner network. Blurb's innovation in the print-on-demand publishing market has helped drive the printed one-at-a-time model that is revolutionizing the way books are created and sold."
By Mediabistro

When newspapers began to make massive layoffs, Six Apart's chief evangelist Anil Dash proposed what used to be known as the Typepad Journalism Bailout Program. Thousands of writers flocked to his blog network looking for answers in this confusing new media economy. GalleyCat caught up with Dash during the two-day Mediabistro Circus extravaganza.Dash joined a future of publishing panel with PCMag.com executive editor Dan Costa led a discussion between Eileen Gittins (CEO of Blurb.com), and Rob Samuels from the NY Times.
How 25 Million Chinese Readers Read Online

In a sparsely attended BEA panel about Chinese literature, publishing consultant Rüdiger Wischenbart and Wan Rong Books publisher Lu Jinbo discussed how Chinese publishers discovered 25 million readers online. The two speakers pondered the shifting publishing landscape, particularly how the recent report, the Chinese website Shanda Literature has 25 million readers and handles about 90 percent of China's booming online literary readership with a unique subscription model. After the panel, GalleyCat caught up with Wischenbart for that video interview about what American publishers can learn from Chinese publishing. If you want to learn more about the panel, blogger Eric Rosenfield recorded some of the country's astounding piracy statistics.
By Mediabistro

How to Build a Literary iPhone App

At BEA this year, everybody talked about iPhone apps, but only one person taught you how to do it.

GalleyCat caught up with Matt Supko, the developer behind the popular ABA/Indiebound app which allows readers to find local indie bookstores and browse books on their iPhone. In this exclusive video interview, Supko explains how he built the app and landed 50,000 downloads in a few action-packed months.

Supko also spoke at the excellent "7×20x21" event, a BEA presentation discussion curated by Ryan Chapman and Ami Greko. They chose seven industry professionals and gave each speaker seven minutes, the chance to choose 20 slides, and 21 seconds to talk about each picture.
By Mediabistro

What can publishers learn from a social networking campaign that doesn't go the way they planned?

GalleyCat caught up with Doubleday/Knopf's online director Jeffrey Yamaguchi for an exclusive interview about what he learned from a campaign for Michael Crichton's novel, "Next." Since fall 2008, Magellan Media has monitored pirated copies of O'Reilly Media titles on illegal download sites. GalleyCat caught up with the New York University grad student who actually collected all the data--cruising file sharing sites every day since the study began. This video interview contains practical advice for publishers looking to monitor pirated books on file sharing sites. The company just released its findings as a new report entitled "Impact of P2P and Free Distribution on Book Sales."
By Mediabistro

How can publishing keep up with Wall Street? When the stock market crash hit last year, publishers scrambled to catch up with the lightening-fast reversal in America's fortunes. Last week GalleyCat caught up with Time Magazine's financial reporter, Justin Fox, talking about how publishers and writers struggle to capture this rapidly changing market. His new book, "The Myth of the Rational Market," gives a history lesson about the authors, economists, and stock brokers who tried to analyze finance over the last century. Here's more about the book: The efficient market hypothesis--long part of academic folklore but codified in the 1960s at the University of Chicago--has evolved into a powerful myth ... The theory holds that the market is always right, and that the decisions of millions of rational investors, all acting on information to outsmart one another, always provide the best judge of a stock's value. That myth is crumbling."
By Mediabistro

As the publishing recession drags on, many young writers are advised to avoid short story collections--they seem too hard to sell in this tough economy.

Earlier this week GalleyCat interviewed Laura Furman, editor of the annual O. Henry prize anthology, who debunked publishing short story myths. She's edited short story anthology collections for years, and in this video explains that reports of the short story's death are greatly exaggerated.

Here's more about the PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories 2009 anthology that Furman edited: "[It] is the result of a new partnership between Vintage and PEN American Center. Proceeds from the collection will be directed to PEN's Readers & Writers Program, and the anthology will become a reading staple in PEN’s Writing Institute."
By Mediabistro

Imagine Malcolm Gladwell lecturing a group of corporate executives in the middle of a sweaty basketball game or Paulo Coelho leading a self-help seminar through a desert. Generations of speakers have used metaphors to explain business concepts--long tails, fat tails, sports, war, and card games--but Roger Nierenberg places his audience inside a small orchestra.

Yesterday this orchestra conductor and leadership guru gave a lecture about running a business with a full orchestra. Nierenberg illustrated management principles at the Portfolio imprint's event celebrating his upcoming book, "Maestro: A Little Story About Leading by Listening."

GalleyCat filmed the climatic final act when twenty invitees crowded on the conductor's podium to experience the driver's seat of an orchestra. Afterward, we caught up with Portfolio Books founder and publisher Adrian Zackheim to find out what this title taught him about publishing.
By Mediabistro

Actor Johnny Depp is currently docked outside of Puerto Rico on a 156-foot yacht, shooting an adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson 's novel, "The Rum Diary."

In a recent trip to Puerto Rico, one GalleyCat reporter re-read the book and explored vintage footage of the island--retracing Thompson's footsteps in this video essay. Both the novel and film are set around 1959, when Thompson struggled as a reporter at a Puerto Rican newspaper.

Literary Traveler describes the period: "Puerto Rico was like another West, where people dreamt of staking out a piece of paradise and getting rich. Young Hunter S. Thompson tried to get a job at The San Juan Star, but was rejected by the editor, William Kennedy, who went on to become a successful writer and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for his novel, Ironweed. (Despite rejection, the two remained lifelong friends.) Still desperate to get down to San Juan, Thompson accepted a more dubious position at El Sportivo, a fledgling English weekly about sports."
By Mediabistro

Few literary critics inspire emotion like NY Times critic, Michiko Kakutani . Some worship her reviews, and others, (like Norman Mailer ) wished they could change her mind. Last night, novelist John Wray took the cult of Kakutani to a new level--unveiling his magic marker tattoo. As part of the Happy Ending Music & Reading Series, founder Amanda Stern requires all performers to take a risk. Joined on stage by Wells Tower , Arthur Phillips, and the band, Vampire Weekend, Wray had some tough competition. His full-back tattoo read "KAKUTANI 4 EVAH," eliciting gasps, laughter, and cheers from the audience.
By Mediabistro

Amazon.com Inc. unveiled the new Kindle DX today, taking a dramatic step into the e-textbook market. GalleyCat prowled the packed press conference at Pace University in New York City, trying to find out why cash-strapped students would pay $469 for this new device. We landed a short video interview with Steven Kessel, SVP of worldwide digital media at Amazon, and the executive delivered a pitch aimed straight at college students. When the device is released this summer, Kessel believes that students will see a value in the Kindle DX's reading experience and pay a premium price. Earlier today, GalleyCat interviewed an executive at another e-textbook company who thinks that college students will prefer laptops to the Kindle DX.
By Mediabistro

Poet Eileen Myles on Rock & Roll

"In the 1970s, the connection between poetry and rock & roll was utter. They were the same people. People who wrote poems were in bands. That didn't happen again, it seemed to me, until the 90s." That's a quote from poet Eileen Myles .Since her first 1974 reading at the punk rock mecca CBGB, Myles published more than 20 volumes of poetry, fiction, articles, plays, and libretti. GalleyCat caught up with Myles, talking about the recession and her historic experiences in New York City's East Village. The interview came during a poetry reading celebrating the release of "Poems from the Women's Movement" anthology. GalleyCat also interviewed Erica Jong about the lack of publishing parity; Honor Moore about "Male Approval Desire" and publishing; and Anne Waldman about preserving the chapbook in this digital age.t
By Mediabistro

As the Internet and digital books revolutionize poetry distribution, beat poet Anne Waldman is teaching a new generation of poets the singular art of the poetry chapbook.

In this video interview, the celebrated poet explains what she learned about self-publishing over the course of her career. In addition to writing, Waldman co-founded of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Institute with Allen Ginsberg.

Last week Honor Moore, editor of "Poems from the Women's Movement," hosted a poetry reading at Saint Peter's Church in Manhattan--bringing together generations of renowned poets to celebrate the release of the Library of America anthology. GalleyCat interviewed a number of these poets, including Erica Jong about the lack of publishing parity and Honor Moore about how "Male Approval Desire" hobbles women.
By Mediabistro

Book Trailer Tips from PEN Festival

Last night at the Rattapallax/PEN World Voices Literary Film Feast, GalleyCat went searching for advice about book trailers. Hundreds of authors have tried to build videos, but the festival showcased the work of the world's leading literary filmmakers.

GalleyCat interviewed Ram Devineni , the publisher of the multimedia magazine, Rattapallax about his work curating the festival. The video also includes a conversation with literary filmmaker D J Kadagian about his short poetry films, Rant and Rave--a seamless blend of classic poems and found images.

Here's more about Kadagian's work: Each of our 15 poems has been crafted into a short film with its own unique image set and soundtrack ... you will find yourself on the front seat of the Cyclone in 1940’s Coney Island, scrambling for cover in present day Iraq or on the Space Shuttle looking back at earth. Maybe you’d prefer hanging out in a smoky Tango bar in 1922 Argentina, participating in a Union strike during the Great Depression, wandering the desert in Israel looking for meaning or dancing with a tribe of American Indians in 1895."
By Mediabistro
