Zoubi is an Arab Israeli politician who currently serves as a member of the Knesset for Balad. First elected in the 2009 election, she is the first woman elected to the Israeli Knesset on an Arab party's list. Zoubi studied philosophy at the University of Haifa, earning a BA, and continued her education at Hebrew Univeristy in Jerusalem, earning an MA in psychology. She worked as a teacher and later served as a schools inspector for the Ministry of Education. In 2000, she co-founded the media organization I'lam (pronounced e'e'lam). Prof. Ruth Gavizon was born in 1945 in Jerusalem. She is a Professor of Law at Hebrew University, is one of the founders of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) as well as its Chairperson for many years and is President (1996-1999) and founder of the Metzilah Center. Since 1997 she has been a member of the International Commission of Jurists. In 1999-2001 she was involved in a dialogue with Rabbi Ya'acov Medan which produced a publication outlining a foundation for a New Covenant between Jews on Issues of State and Religion in Israel (2003). Gavison has written extensively on the meaning and justification of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, while pointing out tensions and ways to accommodate them. She has won the Zeltner Prize for legal research in 1997; the Avihai prize (with R. Medan) in 2001; Jerusalem Toleration prize in 2002; and the EMET prize for law in 2003. Join us for the screening of a documentary film that tells the story of the Balaban family. Ronit Balaban will be present at the screening of the film and available for questions after the film. Synopsis: After Ya'akov was terribly disfigured in an accident, Ronit tries to save the family greenhouse. Ya'akov hasn't left the house for four years and Ronit is struggling to survive. In spite of all the obstacles, Ronit perseveres. The family greenhouses grow and every year hundreds of thousands of carefully tended plants go out to buyers around the world. Life with her injured husband requires an incredible amount of patience and strength. She lives with the hope that Ya'akov's face will be reconstructed to a degree which will finally satisfy him. Only then will Ya'akov be able to open himself back up to the world and emerge from the seclusion to which he condemned himself. The home of Ronit and Ya'akov Balaban was in Moshav Ganey Tal that was in Gush Katif. The Disengagement put their family in a precarious position. Ronit, taking a desperate gamble, tries to relocate the greenhouses while Ya'akov faces the loss of his home which has also been his fortress. Israel Harel was the chairman and CEO of Yesha Council - the Council of Jewish Communities of Judea & Samaria. Harel is one of the founders of the community of Sebastia, lives in Ofra, and writes a column for Haaretz newspaper. He established the newspaper Nekuda, creating a space for religious writers who did not find their place in the (secular) popular Israeli press. Many currently prominent religious Israeli journalists, in radio, print and TV, entered the field via Nekuda: Uri Orbach, Bambi Sheleg, Yair Sheleg, novelist Mira Keidar and many more. Mosi Raz was born in Jerusalem, served in the IDF (finishing as a major) and was one of the first soldiers in Maglan Elite infantry unit. Raz studied economics and accounting at Hebrew University and chaired the Council for Students' Associations. Raz served as a member of the Knesset for Meretz between 2000 and 2003. A well-known activist, Raz has served as secretary-general of Peace Now and director of the non-profit organization Ir Shalem.
