Skype isn't making much profit, ebay and the search engines make money by bringing people to places where stuff is sold.
Thus, he is wrong, paying customers is the foundation of the internet, not old fashion.

It would have been nice to actually see what he's talking about now...

That's a good point he's making: data collection cosumes vast amounts of money and to charge a small fraction doesn't help anyone. Let's have freely available statistical data.
