<p><a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/Flourish/videos/12/" title="Flourish 2008 - John Waclawsky - The Revolution at the Edge of the Network" ><img src="http://cdn-thumbs.viddler.com/thumbnail_1_61ab1c4d.jpg" width="114" height="86" alt="Flourish 2008 - John Waclawsky - The Revolution at the Edge of the Network" border="0" /></a></p>

The technology world is expanding from its focus on technology-specific businesses such as PCs, cell phones, set top boxes, providing Telecom services, etc. to the business of facilitating Human Interaction. The human perspective is clear when we look from the edge of the network in, not from the inside of the network out. The outside, or edge, perspective reveals the way people use their technology while the inside perspective is a restricted view of what a network anticipates or how it allows attached devices to behave.

Today the view at the network edge reveals a communications world in the midst of a multi-decade transformation from Plain Old Telephony Service (POTS) to a multi-dimensional gadget-filled future surrounding each individual, beginning with ubiquitous network(s) access via Personal Area NetworkS (PANS) using Pretty Amazing New Stuff (PANS**2) at the edge of the network. The devices we carry around with us are causing fundamental human patterns of behavior to change. Edge devices are increasingly facilitating our obtaining all the information we need for our daily activities, no matter what professions, as well as being able to have all our social interactions become automatic and routine. The journey from POTS to PANS**2, driven by Moore, Gilder and Metcalf's laws, is also about the evolutionary communication industry melding (or colliding) with revolutionary Internet thinking.

Individuals are reaching out to the world in a number of different ways via the technology they routinely carry. Cell phones, iPods, PDA's etc. are beginning to offer significant physical connectivity and flexibility that will form the basis of numerous overlapping logical interactions for communications, education, e-commerce, social networking, etc. For the industry, the critical question is what must it do to keep its edge customers happy? The answer is and always has been about "end user value."

From the early days of computers the best instructors in computer science believed that the best way of teaching students was to show them how others wrote good code. "A picture is worth a thousand words" is not only applicable to photography and art. This talk illustrated concrete reasons why and how FOSS should and can be used to propel students to learn faster and easier in the area of complex systems, and why the use of closed, proprietary code is dead and dying.

For a commercial software company, open source is often seen as a threat to software revenue streams but it can also be an opportunity. This presentation focused on IBM's open source strategy as part of a larger business model. The talk began with a timeline of IBM's involvement in the open source movement and examined some of the decisions that were made at key stages. The talk reflected upon at the effects that open source has had on the IBM software portfolio and on specific customer engagements where "free" products have been selected over "for fee" products. The talk ended with a short discussion on both the positive and negative impacts of open source software and what the future may hold for open source.

The linux kernel may seem like a daunting place for people who are (or even for people who are not) new to hacking Open Source operating systems. This talk gave an overview of getting into kernel hacking, which areas of the kernel (and its APIs) might be more amenable to a bit of fine tuning and how to go about getting involved (including mailing list etiquette and all the important business of figuring out whom to pay attention to and whom to ignore). By the nature of the speaker, the talk was focused on kernel device drivers. The talk was rounded out with anecdotes about the best kernel contributions.

Too many programmers have forgotten about the lost art of customer service. All software has users, though most developers have forgotten how to respect them, trust them, or "sell" their software to in an exciting (but honest!) manner. This talk will focus on anecdotes and strategies for keeping software design uncomplicated, making software fast, and putting usability above programming convenience. We'll also focus on the importance of keeping a healthy illusion of simplicity, while allowing abstractions to deliberately leak for power-users.

Open Source provides much of the software infrastructure for many of the world's largest companies and organizations: Merrill Lynch, Google, Pixar, Amazon, the City of New York and probably you - although you might not know it. Innovative products like Linux, Firefox and Apache are the market-leaders in their sectors. There are tens of thousands of Open Source programs used for just about everything! But the economics of Open Source are non-intuitive: How can you make money by giving software away? Why did IBM de-emphasize AIX, after spending billions, in favor of Linux, the product of a loose collaboration of programmers that it can never control? How can the world's greatest city trust Open Source to help manage its jails?

Today we talk about trying to bring the Internet to everyone. But bringing the Internet to everyone is more than just WIMAX and laptops. There are some other serious challenges that need to be considered. Free and Open Source Software is the best solution for the next five billion computers, whether the "last mile" is in Ethiopia or inner city Chicago.
