Suranga Chandratillake, CEO of Blinkx, the London/San Francisco-based video search engine, told TechCrunch's Erick Schonfeld in this segment from the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable that his company is serving ads on 80-90 percent of professionally produced content and on 10-20 percent on user-generated content. The ads are both display and in-stream.

Here is Erick's report on the company's most recent earnings. Revenue is rising substantially, he finds.

While display advertising is down, video search is a growing and viable business, Suranga says.

-- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

By BeetTV

A large portion of the library will be available on 3G within a month: "The technology is basically ready," he says. Volpi spoke to me about the launch from London Monday via video Skype.

Joost has a number of big-name content partnerships with companies including CBS, Viacom, Sony, Warner Music Group, Warner Brothers, and Turner, so it has some pretty great videos to offer: 1,200 shorts and movies (like Men in Black), 400 TV series (like The Daily Show) and around 18,000 music videos.

In the segment, Volpi describes the features of the application, such as its list of most popular videos within the user's geographic area.

--Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

By BeetTV

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/mumbai-terror-a.html
As
As the world has tuned into to live coverage of breaking news on network news channels, others found videos on demand on most of the major news sites and on YouTube, which has uploads of coverage of Indian broadcasters. I've posted the video below. We haven't seen much in the way of user-generated video yet, although there many dramatic photos up on CNN iReports.

CNN has featured live streaming of the events from the beginning.

Last month at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable, we discussed the value of user-generated video for news sites. Commenting in this video is Chet Rhodes of the Washington Post, Andrew Heyward, former president of CBS News, Mark Larkin of CBSNews.com, KC Estenson of CNN.com and co-moderator Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch.

It will be interesting to see how the unfolding effects of the attacks in India will impact this trend.
http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/online-media-co.html

Consumers

Consumers planning to buy a Wii Fit or Blackberry Storm this holiday season should act fast: Those are some of the gadgets that will disappear first this holiday season, according to the great Sold Out Guide on shopping blog Shefinds.com. Last month, I interviewed SheFinds.com founder Michelle Madhok about the Web 3.0 concept behind the site.

"Web 2.0 was all about everybody having access...Everybody had an opinion," she says. "What we're looking for now in Web 3.0 is curation. And that's where we come in."

Shefinds.com is the more popular property of the women-oriented online media company White Cat Media, which also owns MomFinds--and a number of "Finds" domain names for future verticals. Both sites aim to fix the online shopping model, according to Madhok. "If you Google something like black pants, you get 10 million results back. The shopping model is broken for people who want to shop online," she says.

SheFinds.com scouts the web for hot fashion and beauty products and links to them, garnering revenue from the stores when SheFinds visitors click through and make a purchase. Founded in 2004, the site now has 300,000 monthly unique visitors and syndicates its content to The Huffington Post, Real Simple, Comcast, MSN, and Yahoo.

Earlier this year, we published an interview with venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson about the success of women's media company Glam.com, which skyrocketed past iVillage to become one of the top 15 most popular websites in the United States--proving that there's room for newcomers to succeed in the women's market online. We think Shefinds' shopping model makes a lot of sense in this space, and we'll be keeping an eye on this company's progress.

It's too bad online shopping is going to take a major hit this year; according to a report on CNET today, online sales growth projections have been cut in half for November-December.

Update: He

By BeetTV

He finds that 3.6 percent of visitors to CNET used Chrome in October, up from just one percent in September. While CNET users are earlier adopters, the general population uses Chrome less one percent, he finds.

In September, Kelsey interviewed Google Marissa Mayer in San Francisco at the TechCrunch 50 conference. YouTube's Strategic Partner Development Manager Laura Lee explained the value of YouTube Insight for both content creators and marketers at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable last month.

"That tool I think has been really powerful especially to our content publishers, because they can go in and say, 'You know what, I can make marketing decisions, I can even make programming decisions online real time to drill down on a per state level in the U.S. to see how people are really consuming my content," she says.

In late September, YouTube introduced a new feature for Insight called Hot Spots to allow publishers not only to see their most popular videos, but the most popular parts within their videos. We expect Insight to get even more sophisticated with YouTube's new focus on professional, long-form content. YouTube has already acquired television programming and feature films through its recent and much talked-about deals with CBS and MGM.

Greg Sandoval's recent story for CNET, "A coming of age for YouTube," describes YouTube's recent monetization developments.

Insight was launched in March of last year but has not been widely discussed.

Beet.TV Popular with California Dudes!

We checked out Insight for our Beet.TV YouTube channel and learned a few facts about our audience demographic: It's 70 percent male and largely based in California. Angel investor Ron Conway called it "the next multi-billion dollar industry" at TechCrunch50 in September, and more and more ad networks are getting on board. Check out our previous interviews with Digitas and Ogilvy about their branded content offerings.

Adconion launched its video syndication platform AMG-TV in late September (now called Adconion.TV), and with the addition of KTV Digital Media has formed its own branded content division, RedLever, which will produce original branded content for its clients. In September I interviewed Adconion President of North America Keith Kaplan about the evolution of the company's services.

In the segment, he discusses Adconion.TV and its first syndication partner, Vuguru, the new media studio for Michael Eisner's The Tornante Company.
Experimental Ad Budgets for Online Video are "Now Gone," Blip.tv's Dina Kaplan

<a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/BeetTV/videos/372/" title="Experimental Ad Budgets for Online Video are "Now Gone," Blip.tv's Dina Kaplan" ><img src="http://www.viddler.com/thumbnail.action?token=ff11a6f7&size=1" width="114" height="86" alt="Experimental Ad Budgets for Online Video are "Now Gone," Blip.tv's Dina Kaplan" border="0" />

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/experimental-ad.html
Many
Many of the experimental advertising budgets for online video are "now gone" as a result of the fiscal crisis, says Dina Kaplan, co-founder of Blip.tv. I caught up with her yesterday at the "Future of Television" conference in Manhattan where she was a panelist.

Moving beyond the the experimental stage, Dina says she is working closely with ad agencies to create methods to determine the value of online video ads. This is clearly important as many online video creators, ad networks, and syndicators and others have predicated businesses on advertising. Let's hope Dina's method gets traction. We will report on this as it develops in the new year.

Dina was on a panel moderated by Lindsay Campbell, actress and online video celebrity journalist of Wallstrip, then MobLogic. Lindsay told me that her engagement with MobLogic had concluded and she is evaluating other opportunities. Also on the panel, posing with Dina below, were Andrew Budkofsky of Break Media (second from right), Lindsday, and J. Crowley, co-founder of Black20, a NY-based television producer of very funny web video.
Update: Peter Kafka at All Things D has a story up on changes at MobLogic.

Disclosure: Blip.tv is provides video encoding and streaming services to Beet.TV. Blip also represents the purple channel in advertising sales on a non-exclusive basis. Blip also distributes Beet's awesome podcast on iTunes. You will see how it looks on my new iPod Nano at the end of my interview with Dina.

-- Andy Plesser

By BeetTV

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/move-networks-a.html

Move

Move Networks, the small Utah-based company which has created an impressive high quality, low bandwidth solution to streaming video for ABC, FOX, the and others, will now provide its technology to much smaller publishers through an association with Boston-based PermissionTV.

Move's streaming technology is not Flash or Microsoft based, it is a technology it calls "adaptive streaming" -- a process which breaks up and sends along small packets which are assembed by the user depending on local bandwidth. In July I interviewed Move CEO John Edwards who explains how the technology works. It involves a small web plug-in.

PermissionTV is a software for service company which provides ways for companies to integrate video in various Web applications. It has primarily implemented Flash solutions. In October, the curtains went up on Permission and Move's implementation of streaming of on-demand performances by the Metropolitan Opera, available through a subscription service. Some operas are free for viewing.

Permission also collaborates with Move on Fox programming.

Yesterday, I interviewed PermissionTV's Matt Kaplan for an overview on the company and the new association with Move, which is essentially a reseller agreement.

Today, John Edwards will be speaking at the Future of Television Conference. We will cover.
-- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

By BeetTV

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/breaking-major.html

Adobe

Adobe has landed a two-year agreement with MLB.com to stream its 2,500-plus spring training, regular season and post-season games live to MLB.com's 1.5 million subscribers. Games were previously streamed on Microsoft Silverlight, an arrangement announced in August of 2007. In the rich media platform game, Adobe has a home run here. Details were released a short time ago in a presentation by Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch in San Francisco at MAX, the big Adobe developers conference.

In September on the MIT campus, I interviewed Kevin about the evolution of AIR. (Note this is a different Kevin Lynch interview than the one which I posted earlier today on other Adobe news.)

Update: Here's the press release from Adobe.

-- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

By BeetTV

China Leads in Global Internet Attack Traffic, Akamai Reports

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/exclusive-akama.html

China

China was the leading source of Internet attack traffic in the three-month period ending September 30, according to Akamai's quarterly "State of the Internet" report, which the company published today. The United States has maintained its number two spot since Q1, and Japan, which topped the list in Q2, moved down to fifth place.

Akamailogo Last week McColo Corp, a major hosting service for spamming organizations, was taken offline, The Washington Post reported. Botnets using McColo's many Internet addresses were responsible for as much as 75 percent of spam a day, and it will be interesting to see if the shutdown makes any difference in the U.S.'s Q4 rank. Considering attack traffic accounted for 20 percent of America's overall Internet traffic in Q3, my guess is it probably won't--especially as attacks are escalating on other fronts, like the phishing scams that are thriving during the economic crisis.

Attack traffic increased 30 percent globally in Q3, and now originates from 179 countries compared to the 139 countries in Q2, the Akamai report found.

The "State of The Internet" report is based on data collected from Akamai's global server network, which delivers around 20 percent of Internet traffic a day. The network's size makes the data a useful, if not exact, indicator of overall Internet trends.

Andy interviewed Suzanne Johnson, Senior Industry Marketing Manager for Digital Media, in September at the Akamai headquarters in Cambridge, Mass. In the segment, she shows him a demo of the Akamai globe, which demonstrates the reach of Akamai's network. Below is an image from the report of the top originating countries for attack traffic.
--Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

By BeetTV

http://www.beet.tv/2008/11/google-announce.html

Google

Google has introduced technology to track Flash content, the company announced at the Adobe Max conference today. The new tool, Google Analytics Tracking for Adobe Flash, will allow publishers to see how many times an embedded video has been viewed or how often a distributed widget, like an online game, has been used. The offering is a significant move toward the standardization of formats that has long been an obstacle to increased online ad spending and has huge implications for publishers.

In June, Andy interviewed Google Search Evangelist Adam Lasnik about the collaboration between Google, Yahoo and Adobe to index Flash files. I republished the interview above.

--Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

By BeetTV
