There is the standard quality as seen in this video 800x500, and High Quality (HQ) 960x600.

It seems unnecessary to extrude 2 units at a time while creating the long sides. On could have 2x2x2 cubes in the corners and then 2x2x8/2x2x10 cubes for the sides.
The joining in the end could be done by simply selecting everything and do a "remove doubles" in vertex mode, since you have lined it all up nicely.
Otherwise nice job, it is always good to see another blender tutorial... :-)

I see what you are saying. Try the methods you described. The extra geometry is needed. Or else subsurf rounds out the sided too much. And you can't "just remove doubles" because the edges in the corner will look too flat.
